Sign-in problems...

msjorda@gmail.com - 17 Oct 2006 03:00 GMT I've read the other threads posted about sign-in problems but I'm having a problem not listed there.
I am running OS 10.4.8 and Messenger 6.0.1. I deleted the Messenger cache files, restarted the computer, and restarted my DSL modem, and nothing is helping me with my problem.
I am able to sign-in on Messenger without any problems when using my @hotmail.com email address, but when I try to sign on with my @yahoo.com address it tries for a couple minutes then a window pops up saying "Sign in to Microsoft Messenger failed because the service is not available or you may not be connected to the internet."
After trying all those other things to remedy this, I thought it may be a problem with this whole transition to Windows Live, so I went into my Live Settings and changed the password for my @yahoo.com email address. Still nothing.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just to confirm, is your yahoo.com a passportized account?

msjorda@gmail.com - 17 Oct 2006 05:37 GMT Haha... passportized. I like that.
Yes it is, I've been using this Yahoo email with Messenger daily for more than 2 years, and then today this just started happening. Also to update, I've been trying to log on to the Messenger network with those same two email addresses using both aMSN and Mercury Messenger. Again, my Hotmail address works with both, and my Yahoo one does not. When connection fails with Mercury Messenger, a dialogue box opens up saying: "Mercury was unable to sign you in because the connection with the MSN server (207.46.111.30:1863) could not be established."
I know this isn't a thread for those alternate MSN programs, but I thought I'd just make it clear that my Hotmail address works on all 3, whereas my Yahoo address won't seem to work at all.

Can you please try again today and see if your yahoo passport account works? There were server isssues that started last week, that caused many accounts to be considered invalid for a period of time. It is my understanding that this issue has been resolved, but it is possible that your issue is something different.

I've have the same problem from last night. A @msn.com passport can't log in with MS Messenger 6.0.1, with another account (@msn.com) I can log in. The error is "was unable to sign you in because the connection with the MSN server could not be established." I know for sure it's not only a problem of your application (I tried with msn 6, mercury, webmessenger), but I'd like to know if these problems on server are resolved. It's the second time on this account can't access to msn network :-( maybe in less then a month.
Thanks and sorry for any mistake, english is not my language.
Best regards, Domenico.
agaspard@gmail.com - 17 Oct 2006 20:10 GMT I am experiencing the same issue. Cannot sign in using a .mac account that has been passportized for use under the microsoft passport. I have been using it for the last 3 years without any issues.
It is a server side related issue, since I am able to sign with other accounts (hotmail based). This problem started this morning.
I have already deleted cache files, restarted, etc...etc..etc.. and nothing happens. I guess we will have to wait for microsoft to resolve the issue.
If anyone knows anything else, please post.

Are you able to sign-in now with your .mac account?
If not, I need to get some logs.
I need to gather some logs from your sign-in to further investigate. If you could do the following, that would be great.
1) Open System Preferences and choose the Network item. In the Show selector choose Network Status; you should see a list of network interfaces - the current network adapter in use will have a green dot to the left of its name. If you see more than one adapter with a green dot then you will have to figure out which one is the adapter connected to the internet. The description text for the network adapter should show its IP address (looks something like 182.168.0.14) - jot this IP address down as you will need it later. If the description text does not contain the IP address then you should double click on the network interface to open it up. Once you are examining this network interface choose the TCP/IP tab and jot down the IP address.
2) Using the Network Utility (found at /Applications/Utilities/Network Utility.app) select the Info tab and cycle through the Network Interfaces selector looking for one whose IP address matches the IP address that you found in step 1. When you have found the matching network adaptor you will need to note the Unix network interface name shown in the selector; typically something like fw0, en0 or en1.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Before proceeding any further make sure to close down any applications that access the network. These include Web browsers, Email programs, Chat programs, etc. This will help keep your private data private as well as reduce the amount of noise (or non-applicable data) in the network capture.
3) Open the terminal application found at /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app
4) Type the following line into the Terminal application making sure to substitute the XXX with your active network adapter's name (found in step 2). Once the proper network name is substituted for the XXX placeholder hit the enter/return key to start the network capture. This will start the network capture and dump the output to a file named NetworkCapture.txt on your desktop.
sudo tcpdump -i XXX -s 10000 -W ip proto TCP > ~/Desktop/NetworkCapture.txt IMPORTANT NOTE: Once you have entered the above line and hit enter you will be asked for your password; your Mac OS X login password is required to run the tcpdump tool (via the sudo command). Your account must also be able to administer the computer in order for the sudo command to work for you.
5) Attempt to login with Messenger
6) Click on the Terminal window to activate it. Press and hold the control key and press the c key - this will stop the network capture. You should see a file named NetworkCapture.txt on your desktop; you should send this file to harrissrebecca@hotmail.com.

sup_cjv - 17 Oct 2006 21:43 GMT Hi,
I have an hotmail account, same problem. It simply wont log in anymore, from anyplace, not only my primary machine. I get the message "system is temporarily unavailble". Other people have no problem accessing their accounts from the same machines. This has been going on for the past 24 hours or so.

msjorda@gmail.com - 18 Oct 2006 01:09 GMT I just tried signing on and voilà, it's working again.
I guess we'll never know what was wrong, hopefully it doesn't happen again.

There were server issues with select servers and your account was likely on one of them. Most server issues, but not all have been resolved.

Any ideas?
