Is there any way to stop the pop ups in messenger, a friend of mine has a 14
year old and it is causing concern. Its a brand new Tiger edition and it's
their first Mac, and I know little about the Mac either. Any help
appreciated.

TIA Drew

The popups are likely Messenger Alerts and can be turned off in the
Messenger preference settings.  With Messenger running as the topmost (or
active) window click the "Messenger" menu item and then "Preferences..." -
this should bring up the "Preferences" window.  You can then click on the
"Alerts" menu bar item (bell icon) and select the alerts that you want (or
don't want).

Other things that they might try are signing out of Messenger when the child
is on the system or setting up a separate account for the child.  Tiger
allows multiple user accounts/sessions - this is what we use to keep our
daughter's activities separate from ours.

Hope this helps
Greg
