PC user "newbie MAC" question

My in-laws use MACs, I use PCs.  Would I be correct in assuming that they
can use MAC Messenger to place video calls to me using PC messenger, and
vice versa?

Told you it was a real "newbie" question!

No, you would not! Mac messenger does not support video. You can send text
messages fine, but not audio or video.

Good job I asked then!  Is there a MAC "Messenger" like product that _can_
do audio/video calling to MSN Messenger then?

Cheers,
Paul DS.

Don't think so. Yahoo has something that may work on both platforms.

The latest AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) for Windows can do a/v
connections with iChat AV, a Mac client for AIM. To use iChat AV the Mac
must be running Mac OS X 10.3 Panther.

I'm also a new Mac OS X user and I will suggest you download an app called
APPZAPPER.  It will let you try it for a few days before you decide to
purchase it if your going to keep it.

The install/uninstall process in OS X is a bit different than Win XP but it
works fine if you can get used to it.

I have enough confidence in this third party app to reply to your post in
hopes of finding you a solution.

You realize that your being brain washed by pc stupidity!

the mac has a well known application environment in UNIX.

the best chat client application is called AdiumX. it runs 8 clients:
AIM
JABBER
MSN
YAHOO

.Mac
Gadu-Gadu
ICQ
Lotus Sametime
Novell Groupwise
Rendezvous
Yahoo! Japan

Napster
Zephyr

all run contained this one adiumX application

and
it runs circles around msn.......
it loads all of msn's
capabilities.

Microsoft does not have or serve an open standard for video or directX
so. cadd applications and video are proprietary on the pc.

therefore...

outside the pc platform your in an open environment like SGI Irix, IBM, Mac,
Unix or linux.

Microsoft has contained this status in order to keep its loyal pc clone user
base.

Many users out there also know that microsoft did not invent video, audio or
the web..... they
just want you to pay them to have it contained on your pc system.

Go buy a mac and install windows for pc.... and that argument you pc idiots
hold is mute.
Microsoft is both anti-competitve and unsupportive of other computing
environments..... for these two reasons alone..... it should be stopped for
hampering a growing industry and thus made to be an opebn source provider
like the rest are... closed source computing.. is not a public thing.

[snip]

Sigh.  The PC vs MAC argument will run as long as Microsoft props up Apple
as a competitor to avoid US anti-trust lawsuits.  And yes, I agree that the
MAC is a very nice package so don't take my comments as an anti-MAC shot.

Bottom line though is that I get my PCs free typically (cast-offs from
people who upgrade - I don't need speed!) and since I use PCs at work, I
need all the PC specific software for the rare occasions that I take work
home.

Getting back to my original question though, you gave a list of MAC based
video/audio software, for which thanks.  Are there PC versions of these
because the subtext of my original question was "I have PCs, my in-laws have
MACs, we want to make video calls between them".  At the moment, the top
candidate seems to be Yahoo Messenger since MSN doesn't support video/audio
on MACs.  Also, Yahoo seems have a much improved video facility over other
similar products.

Finally, actually the MS products are relatively "open" as they use H.323
(NetMeeting), SIP (Messenger) and RTP (both).  This is fairly typical of the
conference/phone-like portion of MS which is unusually good at keeping
"open".  I suspect this is because they want to be able to inter-operate
with Cisco and other big players in the VoIP market who have adopted open
standards for their newer hardware.

Regards,
Paul DS.

Hey Paul,

There is a MSN Messenger clone (for all platforms, I believe) currently
in development called Mercury Messenger which has preliminary webcam
support. I haven't tested it, but it's still in development. You can
check it out here:
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/14970

Yahoo! Messenger has video, but no audio chat. So it's useless to you.

The latest AOL Messenger for PC will do audio/video chat with iChat AV
on the Mac. However, you can purchase Trillian Pro 3 for the PC which
supports audio/video chat with iChat AV (via the AIM protocol) but it
allows you to access your MSN account within the same interface. It's
worth checking out.

Apple is due to release a major (paid) upgrade to their operating
system called "Tiger" (version 10.4) within a month. The current OS
that comes installed on Macs is "Panther (version 10.3.x). Details are
sparse, but iChat is supposed to come with support for more chat
protocols. Hopefully, there'll be more solutions for PC-to-Mac
video-conferencing.

You could also try combining audio chat via Skype and video chat via
Yahoo messenger or webcame software like Evo-Cam.

I hope this helps.

Cheers,

Bigbluejerk

Here's a comprehensive page about chatting with PC users using AIM and
iChat AV:
