Frequent disconnection from MSN Messenger

Hello everyone, I'm using an ibook G4 and I've got this recurrent
problem with MSN messenger 4.0.1 (and earlier versions) signing out
all the time by itself saying that the internet connection was lost
(not possible because all the other internet programs work fine). It
happens like once every minute or 2 minutes. Sometimes it works fine
but I get it at least once a day. My friend using ibook G4 has the
same problem as well.

Besides that MSN Messenger gets really slow sometimes, the words take
some time to appear on the screen.

Does anyone have a similar problem and have any suggestions on how to
solve this?

Thank you!

I am getting exactly the same in the last few days using a powerbook
G4 and it is driving me mad!!  I have un-installed and re-installed
several times with no luck.  Have you had any luck sorting this?

Just a tip for you guys, not sure if you've already tried it or not, but it
might be an idea to configure the Firewall in Mac OS X to allow MSN Messenger
to communicate properly through the various ports it uses.

Firstly, go to System Preferences, Click on Sharing and you'll see a tab for
Firewall, click on it and add a new rule, call it MSN Messenger FT (File
Transfer) and set it in the range of ports 6891 - 6900. This will open up the
ports that MSN Messenger uses to transfer any files, and should improve
connectivity for file sharing.

The second is to create another rule again calling it MSN Messenger (this is
for the gateway server) but this time, only for one port, that port is 1863.
Once you've enabled this, it will open up the port MSN Messenger uses to
communicate with the .NET Messenger Service and improve connectivity to the
service.

Hope this helps!

PS - if you're using Airport, make sure you've downloaded the latest
firmware and driver updates from Apple using Software Update in the Apple
Menu, these updates are vital and seriously improve performance as well as
connectivity.

Hi there

Thanks for the tip.  I have tried this but I am still getting logged
out.  It does let me stay signed in for slightly longer - about 4 mins
instead of 2.  If you can think of anything else, all contributions
are welcome!

Thanks

Sarah
