I have been using MSN Messenger 4 for Mac up to now without problem (with
OS X). Today I cannot manage to sign in. the only thing that has changed
is that I installed a Trial version of Norton Anti-Virus which scanned my
disk all night long. I am working from a personal computer, not a network.
By the way,  I have always had this problem on my laptop (8.6), never
managed to sign in.

Did you try installing Messenger 4.0.1?
