I'm having the same problem - running MSN Messenger 7.0.1 on an Intel
G5 iMac with OS X 10.5.4 running. This has been happening for a couple
of weeks now, with no luck at all. Trying to sign in on Adium doesn't
work either. Anyone got any ideas?

The error message I get is "Sign into Microsoft Messenger failed
because the service is not available or you may not be connected to
the Internet". Obviously I am connected to the Internet!

Anyone help please? It's driving me insane!
Pingu_3D - 01 Oct 2008 22:06 GMT
Hi, I had the same problem and discovered (via forums and many peeps using
this solution) that my netgear router needed it's firmware downgrading.
Downgraded and it worked.

I am also having the same problem with messenger. No matter what "troubleshooting" suggestions I try, nothing works. The word "frustration" doesn't even begin to describe it!! Would really appreciate hearing from someone who can fix this--and quickly! Thanks!

Also got this problem - still not found a solution
Jordan - 29 Aug 2008 22:12 GMT

Yeah, I've got mine working again. I had Peer Guardian running on my
Mac which was blocking all Microsoft related connections. Switched
that off, and that was it fixed! No problems now either with MSN or
Adium.

bo2212@officeformac.com - 24 Sep 2008 16:11 GMT
I do have the same problem as BigT_90.
When the time I sign in, it asks me to insert the email address, 'USER ID' and password.

I am totally confused about what to type for the User ID.
Can anyone help?
Zachary Moxley [MSFT] - 27 Sep 2008 01:17 GMT
Hi!

Sounds like you're trying to sign in to the Corporate service. This service
is for corporations that use Mac Messenger to enable easier employee
communications. To access the Personal service, go to the "View" menu in Mac
Messenger and choose "Personal Contact List" from the drop-down. This is the
service you will want to sign in to.

Please let me know if this helps!

Zachary Moxley [MSFT] - 09 Oct 2008 00:47 GMT
Hi Everyone,

There is a troubleshooting e-mail posted every Friday that may help you
solve this problem. I'm aware it's very large, and most likely a daunting
undertaking. Fortunately, there is one solution that has received a lot of
positive response recently, so please let me know if this works for any of
you:
1. Quit Mac Messenger
2. On your system drive, navigate to
/Users/<YourUserAccount>/Library/Preferences
3. Delete the file com.microsoft.Messenger.plist
4. Start Mac messenger

You will be placed in the first run set up wizard, and will be asked for
your login credentials again.

Please let me know if this helps.

please help..
Zachary Moxley [MSFT] - 11 Oct 2008 01:16 GMT
I'm sorry to hear that. For those of you that are still having problems
after removal of the plist file, can you please take a screenshot of your
Accounts tab in your Preferences and send it to me personally? You can do
this through the following:
1. Start Mac Messenger.
2. Go to the Messenger menu > Preferences > Accounts tab.
3. Press Cmd+Shift+4
4. Your cursor will change to a crosshair. Drag a square around your
Preferences box (for example, from the top left corner to the bottom right)

This will create a PNG screen capture that will appear on your desktop, most
likely named "Picture 1" or something similar. Please send this directly to
me. Instructions for doing this can be found in my signature below.

Thanks for your help!

Nope, doesn't work for me either. Reminds me of why I switched to MAC to begin with!! This has been here for over two months and it is obvious this is a widespread problem and still no help in site.

Switching to Yahoo Messenger. Thanks MS but No Thanks!

This is hilarious. I have the same problem. One day I could sign on to msn mac messenger, but other user names will sign on. I read and tried the suggestions but it still doesn't work. HAHA. Does apple have problems?
Ell - 25 Oct 2008 15:23 GMT
My microsoft messenger has been signing in for three days now with the loading screen on it for those three days. I can't quit my messenger and I can't stop it from signing in. I even stopped my wireless internet for an hour and turned it back on and it just started signing in again with the loading page still going. Even when I shut down my computer I go to click my messenger and it is still signing in!
Can anyone help me out???
Zachary Moxley [MSFT] - 31 Oct 2008 23:20 GMT
Hi!

We're still investigating the sign in failures. However, if Messenger is
refusing to close, you can force the app to shut down by holding down
cmd+option+escape, choosing "Microsoft Messenger" from the application menu
that appears and pressing "Force Quit".

OK this is getting out of control - I have now deleted (using AppDelete) MSN and downloaded it several different times... it works fine on my MacBook, but not on my iMac. There are no issues with the login details because I can get on to MSN via web messenger which is ridiculously painful.
I have deleted the .plist file. I have attempted to connect using 2x completely different internet service providers... nothing. It WAS working fine, and now it doesn't. I haven't been able to connect for around 3 weeks - please advise!!!!
hamad - 30 Oct 2008 17:24 GMT
Zack ???

no thing new ????

any help....
Zachary Moxley [MSFT] - 31 Oct 2008 23:15 GMT
The Messenger team is still working on getting a solid reproduction of this
behavior on our side and nailing down a cause. I realize this is a very
frustrating situation, and I apologize for the delay.

Do you have any other Office:Mac products installed alongside Messenger?

Hi, having the same problem here: can't connect either to messenger or adium and i don't have anything blocking my ports on my macbook pro... 2 days ago was working perfectly but yesterday it just didn't connect, it says that the service is unavailable or that there isn't any connection to the internet but it works perfectly on my vmware machine using windows xp on the same computer.

I tried to do it but my problem is nowhere closer to being resolved. If I'd known I would have so much difficulty almost from day one, I would've chosen differently. Microsoft for Mac, not lovin ya so much anymore.
andy - 20 Nov 2008 05:18 GMT
hmm... anybody have the problem that it keeps asking to update messenger and then never lets you log in? that's where I'm at
