I, too, have the very same problem. Everything else from Office for Mac 2004
works. I've contacted Microsoft but never received a fix. I ordered Office
for Mac 2008. I'm hoping for a 'cure' there. If you find joy let me know. I
would love to know how to get MSN Messenger to work on my 24" iMac
w/Leopard.

Do you have the OS Firewall enabled? If you do, you need to make sure
Messenger is on the Allowable applications list.
Any chance you are behind any proxies, if so you may need to configure them
in Messengers Preferences using the Accounts tab and choosing manual and
entering the information.

Hi Rebecca,
I saw many posts from you on the net about sign-in problem.
I'm running in the same issue, due to the presence of an HTTP Proxy
(www.privoxy.org) installed on my Mac.
If the proxy is not set, everything is OK: if it is on, I cannot
login.
I set the manual proxy settings in Messenger preferences, with no
results.
No other applications on my Mac are having troubles with this proxy.
What may be wrong with my proxy? I cannot shut it down, but I also
would love to use Messenger.
Thanks for your help.

I found the solution!
(And I guess it's a Messenger issue)
Being behind a proxy, I went to Messengers Preferences using the
Accounts tab, chose manual (tick the checkbox)
WITHOUT entering the information (address and port). By leaving both
fields blank I was able to connect.
Apparently proxy info is retrieved from my Network preferences: I had
this issue with both Tiger & Leopard, Messenger 5.x and 6.x.
Hope this helps other folks suffering the same problem.
W.
