Netgear router, Mac and Messenger problems!

Tallyman - 30 Oct 2007 16:12 GMT Hi
I have just gone wireless with a Netgear DG834PN router. Hooray. I have connected my iMac Mini to it by Ethernet cable, and have installed an Airport card in my G3 iBook. Both computers connect to the router and to the internet without problem. But I'm having a lot of trouble with Messenger for Mac.
I have Messenger for Mac v6 on the iMac Mini, and this logs on ok. The router firewall is switched to allow IM ports to be open. However, I'm running Messenger for Mac v4 on the iBook (as it's only OS X 10.2.8) and it will not log in to Messenger. It says either there is no internet connection or I have the wrong password. I have not tried to log on to Messenger from both computers at the same time (as I know it won't allow that) and I have been careful to log off from one before trying with the other.
Once I have failed to log on with the iBook, and quitted Messenger, I even have trouble loggin on with the iMac Mini, and have to go into the router controls and re-iterate the 'open IM ports' command, even though that is always the default position.
Would anyone know why this is, and perhaps have a suggestion for what to do?
Many, many thanks
Peter
aMmOOooR@gmail.com - 27 Nov 2007 23:21 GMT Finally, I am not alone in this world! I have fetched everywhere I could look to find a solution to the same problem Tallyman is having.. And NO CLUE! I have a Netgear DG834GT router, and I use Messenger on Mac on both my Macbook and my iMac... It used to work perfectly for a long time, but I seriously have no idea what happened... Everytime I try to sign in it brings up this error too fast "You can not sign in because you are not connected to the internet or the service might be down!" Are you kidding? I am connected to the internet, and I checked the services and it's not down. I reset my router, hard reset, and set it up from the beginning and NOTHING! Then, when I take my Macbook to anywhere else on Earth, Messenger for Mac works fine! Also today, a friend with a Macbook Pro came to visit, and he logged with his machine, and he had the same error for his Messenger for Mac, he failed to sign in and of course he blamed it on the network! I called the ISP "TE Data" to fix the problem.. and I blamed them, until I just read this message.. It's either both of us have done something very tiny that has changed a little bit of a setting somewhere we can't find (And that does not include the IM Ports since it's already open!) .. Or, which is more realistic, NETGEAR has got something weird going on. But since my Router has been always NETGEAR, let me ask you Tallyman, have you updated their firmware recently? I have the latest firmware which is 1.02.13.. Check your Router Status, I hope it's not the same number or it might be the firmware. Speaking of which, I might do a downgrade tonight.. Not sure though, if I had any success, I will of course let you know.
If anyone knows a solution, please help us! I can't believe I am using a web-based messenger every time I need to check on my friends online!

I haven't tried any other connection cause my uni blocks the messanger but after reading your posts i'm definitely sure that something weird going with the routers. I'll try to contact Netgear and if i find a solution i'll post it here. Have a nice day, DImitris.

aMmOOooR@gmail.com - 04 Dec 2007 14:38 GMT I have been roaming around lately, and finally got to contact NETGEAR support.. So far, my case have been replied to 3 times, with no success. Everytime, they ask me to edit something in the settings, and try again.. And nothing worked. I'll keep you informed in case I reached any solution. Good luck.

Guys... This will not fix your Messenger:Mac, but at least you can connect to your MSN using Mac OS without bothering yourself with using a web-based messenger.. Just download Adium, I believe you've tried to connect through that, too, and it didn't work.. Just go to the Account Settings in Adium, there's a tab named "Options" I believe, there you will find a port number and an address, you can either try opening the port (didn't try that), OR, just tick the "Connect Using HTTP" option.. Try to re- connect, and voila, it will connect. I am still negotiating with NetGear support, they are too slow, and every solution they come up with, doesn't work @ all. So, until then, you can use Adium, and when I find a solution for messenger:mac, I will be updating you.
Good luck
Josep - 16 Dec 2007 20:21 GMT Hi guys! i've solved this big, i downgraded firmware to dg834gt_1_02_09.img (you can download it form netgear site). It works fine, it take about 5 minutes!

For those of you with a Netgear DG834PN, I've had this issue. I have checked with G5PPC+10.5.1&2, G5Intel+10.5.1&2, & G4 PPC+10.4.10). All have the issue yet my XP machine experiences no issues.
It occured after I upgraded the firmware. Even though the admin interface says the ports are open on the firewall, for some reason the MAC is blocked yet XP traffic passes through.
I have now reverted to an older firmware (V1.03.25) and all is back and working properly. The downgrade experience was fine and I haven't had to reconfigure any settings although I did backup the config files beforehand just in case.
I went back to 1.03.25 because all versions subsequent to that claim to have 'special settings' for IM, I had previously gone straight from the version it came with to 1.30.36. Can't be sure the ones in between don't work but can confirm that this version 1.03.25 does. All versions are downloadable from the Netgear support site.
Hope this saves someone somewhere some time.
Chrs, dave

I too upgraded my Netgear DG834PN firmware to v1.03.36 a few weeks ago and have had intermittent problems wirelessly connecting to it from an Intel Mac with OS 10.4.x, which I put down to updating the Mac OS rather than the router, as other computers (old iMac G3, new Macbook, old PC WinXP) had no connection problems.
Then my daughter reported not connecting to MSN Messenger from her Macbook and I eventually found dave's post as a potential solution. I can confirm that down-grading the router firmware to v1.03.35 cured both my daughter's Messenger connection and my Intel Mac's wireless connection to the router itself, which is now reliable.
Whoever is responsible at Netgear for the changes from v35 to v36 should be shot, or at least fired.

I followed Josep's lead. Success!!!! First time I have been able to use Mac Messenger in weeks other than at the Apple Store. I suspected the router was the problem as I went in-store to seek the advice of a Mac Genius and embarrassingly found I could easily log in to Mac Messenger.
So to be clear, if you are having problems using Messenger for Mac and are using a NETGEAR router, suspect the router or at least try using ypur macbook with another router, perhaps the Apple Store one!
Thank you Josep

we had exactly the same problem as described on a DG834gt, but only when using messenger on the mac (leopard), not on XP. My wife was about to return the new (and our first) mac already, because we couldn't get messenger to work, but downgrading the router's firmware to 1.02.09 solved the problem.
Big thanks to Josep!!

No MSN or Adium connectivity through Netgear wireless router from 10.5 desktop and 10.4.9 laptop. The latter works fine on external wireless connections.
A week and a half of email tennis with Netgear Support Staff attempting various unsuccessful work rounds with the router configuration (ADSL DG834GT) running firmware 1.02.14 and I'm losing the will to live.
Half an hour on this thread and one backwards firmware upgrade (downgrade?!) to 1.02.09 and it's all working fine.
Now to see if Netgear acknowledge they have a problem....
