You'll need to use a different application such as aMSN <http://www.amsn-project.net/>.
Hope this helps!

Users in their tens of thousands (literally) have been asking Microsoft for years and years (literally) to add video and voice capabilities to MSN Messenger for Mac to match the Windows version.
For years (literally) Microsoft have been promising this will be added in the 'next' version, and for years this has been shown to be yet another lie.
It is time to face reality, the world's largest software developer (Microsoft) is patently the world's worst software developer. They obviously have no intention of ever doing this.
I suggest you dump the festering pile of excrement that is Microsoft's pitiful effort at an instant messaging application for the Mac, and use an alternative one.
Yahoo! Messenger for Mac can do video and voice and is fully compatible with the Windows version. See http://messenger.yahoo.com/mac.php
Skype for Mac can do video and voice and is fully compatible with the Windows version. See http://www.skype.com/go/downloading
X-Lite for Mac can do video and voice and is fully compatible with the Windows version. See http://www.counterpath.com/xlitedownload.html
Dear Microsoft, there is a reason Mac users despise Microsoft software (for the Mac) and that's because it stinks. It is not merely an us vs. them issue, it is because ALL your Mac products are genuinely a pile of poo. If even ONE of them was at least equal (both in features and quality) to its Windows equivalent it would go a HUGE way to repairing your appalling reputation.
Note: Even Office for Mac is horrifically flawed, although standalone users not exchanging documents may not notice this.
Delivering poorly ported, crippled, ugly, buggy software to the Mac is WORSE than not delivering a Mac application at all. If this means discontinuing ALL their (pitiful handful of) Mac applications then go ahead make my day.
Microsoft still have the cheek to boast they have biggest Mac development team outside Apple, and yet they still can't deliver a single decent Mac application.
I have used Microsoft software on Apples since BEFORE the Mac even existed (on Apple ][+), and used Microsoft software on Macs since 1984 and the original Word 1.0 and Multiplan. So I can remember when Microsoft used to write decent Mac applications.
I would go further than Steve Jobs famous comment that Microsoft have no taste, and say they obviously also have no pride in their products either.

Mukkapazzza - 26 Nov 2007 14:19 GMT I have also very, very, bad exprecience with microsoft software (have been using PC for 20 years now). But could somebody explain to me why everybody is so happy with Macs? I just bought one (MacBook Pro - did cost me a bomb) and yes it's very fast but it crashed already many times (at least as many as my windows computer)... and... The reason why I came to this site is that now with my new Mac I can't videochat with my friends who are all on Windows Live Messenger. Yes, true, Microsoft could have developed a better software for Mac - but why on earth do I have to pay Apple to open a new account to be able to use Ichat ?!?!?! (cosider none of my friends is on AIM) I'm very disappointed with this Mac and Apple who I'm not able to contact directly in any way. Why this hype about Macs? Btw. thanks for all the suggestions. The links helped a lot. M.

The Mac did or the applciations you were using on the Mac did?? Though Apple has its share of blame for crashes, quite often the apps are just buggy and need to be updated.

It's not supposed to communicate with Messenger at all. Messenger is a Microsoft application using a Microsoft protocol and network.
I also don;t understand why you'd have to pay anything?? You sure don't have to pay to create an account in iChat. You can create a free one or even use any AIM (or Jabber) account.

For one thing, it's very easy to directly contact Apple. Call them. The number's at http://support.apple.com - I can't remember it off the top of my head.
Also, yes, on a Mac, the OS almost NEVER crashes... it's usually an application if anything at all, and usually an MS app at that.
iChat does works with AIM, .Mac, Bonjour (local messaging), and any Jabber server (including Google Talk). No extra fees required.
Video/Audio is supposed to be added to the Mac version of Windows Live Messenger (Microsoft Messenger) in the next version. We'll see.

Unfortunately, the next version of Messenger will only support video for Corporate messaging, not Windows Live (personal) messaging. Work on the video for the Windows Live (personal) service is still under development. http://blogs.msdn.com/macmojo/archive/2007/11/12/a-chat-about-messenger.aspx

Only Microsoft was ever stupid enough to have two different ones and finally they are coming to their senses and merging them.
Unfortunately, it will take a long while for the existing great unwashed masses using personal Messenger for Windows to upgrade to Messenger 9 (for Windows) which will use this new stack. Meaning it will be equally a long time before the majority of Windows users can be communicated with by Macs using Messenger 7.
My estimation has been sometime in 2009 before both the new Windows and Mac versions are fully released.

I suspect it is an application crashing rather than the entire computer, a properly working Mac will rarely completely crash. My PowerBook currently shows an uptime of 112+ days without having needed to be rebooted. In fact pretty much the only time I reboot is when I install an operating system update that requires it.
For iChat you can use a free AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) account to login to iChat, or you can create a trial .Mac account AND COUNTINUE TO USE IT EVEN AFTER THE TRIAL HAS FINISHED.
However for Video/Voice iChat will only link to either another Mac running iChat, or a PC running AIM.
You can also use iChat on a local network without needing an AIM or .Mac login at all (but this is only for talking to other Macs on your local network).
Note to others: Yes you can text chat to other systems via Jabber in iChat, but not video/voice.

MacManX - 18 Mar 2008 11:07 GMT Remember that to anyone outside US (ie the rest of the world) iChat/AIM is not an option. Everyone else is using Live Messenger for instant chatting.
Until Mac:Messenger 7.0 and WLM 9 has been released - use aMSN for videochat. I do and it works beautifully! :)
Michel Bintener - 18 Mar 2008 13:44 GMT iChat/AIM are not restricted to the US; they can be used anywhere, provided that each chat participant has an AIM/.Mac account. And that's precisely where the problem lies: because many people use MSN, and because IM clients such as iChat are not compatible with MSN, there is, in most cases. no point in using them, as it would force one of the parties to give up their current IM client and adopt a new one.

MacManX@officeformac.com - 05 May 2008 15:25 GMT Michel, that's what I meant... Thanks mate for clarifying! :)
iChat/AIM is not widely used outside the US. In fact I've never even heard of anyone using AIM here in Europe. I guess that's why there's so much frustration going on. We'll just have to wait until WLM9 is released and in the mean time use aMSN if we really need webcam. For general instant messaging Messenger:Mac 7 works just fine. There are a few minor bugs though - were do I report them?
