Despite what MSN support seems sometimes to think IE for Mac (not even
supported for a long time back) IE has nothing to do with the Messenger.

You do not need install IE, maybe there's something wrong with your ms live
ID.

IE is NOT recommended even by Microsoft, as it has been decommisioned and they have advised users to upgrade to newer products such as Firefox and Safari. IE has outstanding security issues, and a terrible page renderer.

For your Messenger issue, go to www.hotmail.com and enter your username and password. Confirm that you can log into your Hotmail and that it isn't inactive.

In Messenger, make sure you are using the exact same username, including the domain suffix, eg: @hotmail.com, @msn.com, and password that you used for Hotmail. That's all that should be necessary.

If you have any more trouble, go into the Messenger Preferences (click the Messenger menu in the top left of the menu bar) and check the Account settings. You may need to adjust your proxy settings as appropriate. This may mean specifically setting to "No proxy", or you may need to manually configure your proxy server/port as necessary (if you use one). If in doubt, try the "No proxy" option (proxies are usually only required in a corporate or academic network, not for home use).

Note that Messenger 6.0 has a broken SOCKS5 implementation, so if your network admins require you to use a SOCKS5 proxy server, you are stuck until Microsoft fixes it (it has been at least 2 years).
