Messenger 6.02 unable to sign in to corporate network over VPN - works fine otherwise

Hello,

I've read several other posts about sign in difficulties with LCS but
none seem to have the exact problem as me. Hopefully you can help. I'm
using 6.02 to sign into our corporate LCS platform. On the Corporate
tab, automatic config doesn't work. But manual config specifying the
server name (server.domain.com) and TLS as the connection type works
fine provided it's not over VPN. If I start my VPN connection the
Messenger connection drops with the following error:

"Sign in to Microsoft Messenger failed because the service is
temporarily unavailable. Please try again later."

Tried auto config and TCP connection but neither works over VPN.

If I disconnect the VPN connection then Messenger will reconnect just
fine.

I've sniffed the connection and the Messenger client is sending &
receiving packets from the LCS server through the VPN connection. I
can see the TCP handshake and about 16 or 17 packets worth of data
packets back & forth in the transmission before I get the error. If I
sniff the VPN port I see internal address space. If I sniff the
Ethernet port I see the outside IP for the LCS server.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I work in the field and
need VPN to sync Entourage and access other internal systems. So it's
either use Entourage or disconnect VPN & use OWA so I can have
Messenger up but not both. Very inconvenient.

Thanks for any help the group can provide!

Hi Mason!

Auto config must be set up properly by your network administrator. Not
all networks support this, so not surprising it doesn't work.

However, are you saying that you're accessing your Corporate network's
LCS server from outside your network? If so, do you have an alternative
server you should be using for internal access? That's what you'd need
to use via VPN.

Alternatively, you can also configure Entourage to connect from the
Internet to your account if you're able to access Outlook Web Access
(OWA). This does not require VPN. Have a look at this article on the
Entourage Help Page
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/exchange/exchangeathome.html>.

Hope this helps! bill

Thansk for the help Bill. I'm still working through the LCS issue with
our tech support but at least I have a decent OWA work around now.
