I want to install Lame so that Audacity can use it.  I found a few
on-line that want me to put a directory someplace, but without
understanding how this works, I continued searching until I found
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/18882 which appears to be a
standard installation.

But after I installed it, I still couldn't find it and direct Audacity
to it.

I suppose it is somewhere on my computer, but I'm not finding any
evidence of it.

How do I find it?   Or is there a simpler way to get Audacity to
export .MP3 files?

Did you start here:

I will try that, thanks.

Usually it is installed as a file (LameLib.1) in the Audacity Program
Folder, and just just have to point the Audacity App at the folder.

Spotlight doesn't see it.

Stuffit has a file named "build", a file named "Lame Library v3.97
installer.pmproj", a folder named "package", and the following
"readme.txt".   I did get to the sudo command a couple of months ago,
but as I remember it was after I got rid of my administrative
privilege, and maybe I didn't get the admin box to install it.

More likely, I installed it the wrong place.

==================================
This zip contains a 3.97 build of "libmp3lame.dylib" for use in
Audacity 1.2.5 on Intel Macs, and in current Audacity 1.3.x versions
on all Macs. The file is located at the bottom of the "package"
folder:
/package/usr/local/lib/libmp3lame.dylib

Extract it to a folder of your choice with Stuffit or other expander
that
supports zip.

If you would like to rebuild it, you'll need Xcode and the
source from http://lame.sourceforge.net.

1)  Untar the source
2)  Change to the lame-3.97 directory
3)  Execute the script included in the tarball.

You'll find the newly built library, libmp3lame.dylib, in the
lame-3.97
root directory.

NOTE: As written, the build script requires the 10.2.8 SDK and gcc 3.3
compiler
to be installed in addition to the 10.4 SDK and gcc 4.0 compiler. This
is to
provide compatibility back to 10.2 for the PPC architecture.

Also, it is meant to be run from a PPC based Mac.  Slight
modifications will need
to be make to allow it to run on an Intel based Mac.

Included is a simple installer project that you can use to install the
library
into /usr/local/lib.  You create the installer package with:

sudo /Developer/Tools/packagemaker -build -proj Lame\ Library\ v3.97\
Installer.pmproj -p ../Lame\ Library\ v3.97\ Installer.pkg

I'm trying to break up large MP3 files.   I knew how to do that with
Audacity for Windows.

I have tried Garage Band, but figuring that out isn't at all
intuitive.   I never found any way to import the song other than drag
it to the Garage screen.   I couldn't adjust the window size, but
eventually found a tiny icon that switched between having the music
stay in the middle as I played it, or having the line scroll off the
image.

But I selected a song, and was able to save something as an MP3 file -
I think.  I gave it a name, but it took a long time, leading me to
think it saved the whole thing.   Since I can't find it using
spotlight nor my finder, I can't tell for sure.

Every few months I try running it to see if enough Apple has rubbed
off on me to figure it out.   I suspect someone with music experience
wouldn't need as long as I fear it will take me.

So I'm trying to get Audacity to work instead, but it needs Lame.

I just use Quicktime Player to do that kind of thing.  Works great every
time!

You may need to purchase Quicktime Pro ($30) to enable that
functionality in QTPlayer:

Amadeus, also $30, works very nicely for this, too.

And this is exactly why a clear statement of one's goals in the original
post is a Very Good Idea. All too often, the OP asks for help with a
very specific issue, but knowing the goals allow us to see the big
picture and provide advice that goes beyond that specific issue.

Of course, having said that, it occurs to me that the OP is trying to
avoid spending the money, as Audacity requires LAME to open MP3 files.
Did he ever say whether he followed the link that Warren provided? I
don't recall having seen a followup.

I'm going to be absolutely broke for my personal budget the next few
months.   That link resulted in my most recent follow-up.

Yep - I've also used Amadeus to do this as well. Great app!

Note: While Amadeus is primarily geared toward editing audio files,
QuickTime Player with the Pro upgrade is geared toward editing many
different types of video and audio files. So you may get more bang for
your buck if you go with QuickTime Pro.  Definitely install both and
check them both out before making your decision.  Or, if you're like me,
maybe you'll get both.  : )
