either, if you mean what i think you mean.

in finder's view options (cmd-j) you can make the icons smaller
everywhere.

in finder's preferences, under the general tab, click the open new
windows in column view checkbox. now why they can't offer a choice of
all three views is anyone's guess.

Ok I changed the item under the general tab in the finder but when I
create a new folder it still opens in large icon view. The way I open
it either with a double click with the mouse or If I select the folder
and either use the keyboard as in command O or using the file drop
down menu or control click with the contextual menu its all the same.
The only way to get it to work is if I add something to the folder as
a drag and drop and use the spring-loaded feature to open it then it
goes permeably to column view. I find that so strange and not to Mac
clever if you get what I mean. And now if I have a folder in my
preferred list view and happen to drag for a spring-loaded placement I
loss my beloved list view!
What I guess I can’t have is for a new folder that has not been opened
but has had stuff dragged to it to open in List (not going to happen)
view. But that procedure will not even open them as lists or am I
doing something wrong or is OS X just only going to do it one way
without a good choice in preferences? OK if I cant have it the way I
would like can I at least get the windows to default to smaller icons
when new and first opened? As the fact that I am using the older 10.3
has apple gotten better at view preferences and defaults with the
newer OSs?

view options, set the icon size to whatever you want, and make sure
it's set to all windows.

no, it's worse.

I wouldn't say it's worse. Apple has made improvements. For instance,
there is now a "Always open in list view" checkbox in the View Options
window, and Apple has fixed several view-related bugs in Mac OS X since
10.3.

in leopard, one must tag every folder to retain the view mode, whereas
in tiger and earlier, it used whatever view the folder was last in.
thus to change views and make it stick in leopard, one must now switch
to the desired view, open view options, click the always open check
box, then close view options.
in tiger, one only needed to switch to the desired view and close the
window.
i consider that getting worse.

I seem to be getting more confused. In 10.3 when I have a folders
window open and I choose view options and set a certain way and have
the all windows button selected. What happens do all windows I will
then open even if they were created before change to what I put or
just the folders within that folder? Or just new folders created?
And if I make changes I don’t want since there is no cancel button how
do I go back to the way it was when I opened the view option pref box.
Is there a keyboard key that will bring me back to what I had if I
forget exactly how I had it set?
