I don't know whether this is something my young son has done but I got
hom last night to find OSX (4.4.6) on a G4 behaving very oddly. The only
way I can put it is that it seems to have gone negative: the all whit
backgorunds have become black, the pale blue background has become a
sort of khaki/yellow, the reds green etc. Even mor eodd is that it just
affects my account (which was the only one). I created a new acocunt and
the G4 behaves perfectly normally. I've looked around at differernt
setting setc but I can't see how this could have happened or how to put
it right. Any suggestions?

Look in the "Seeing" pan of "Universal Access" System Preference.  You
probably have "White on Black" instead of "Black on White".  Your son
must have pressed Cmd-Option-Ctrl-8

Thanks for the solution. which solved the problem. My one last question
is why has Apple made such a facility availaible.

For people who are colour-blind, require a high-contrast display, or have
certain types of dyslexia.

My computer runs at 3.5MHz and I'm proud of that

Apple has always had a commitment to accessibility. The negative
display is actually easier for some people with vision problems to deal
with.

I use it quite a lot, personally. Very useful when the eyes get tired
from reading black text on a large white page. Remember, on a computer,
unlike on a book, white is BRIGHT. The computer is shining a light in
your eyes the whole time you're reading.
