My iBook G4 went to sleep automatically then wouldn't turn on.
I held the button for 5..10 seconds, again and again.  Nothing!
Taking the battery out and putting back, it turned on!  It's running ok

now.

Was it just a crash?
Or a symptom of an iBook that will die soon (mine is < 1 year old)?

I hope not, the new x86 iBooks have crummy integrated part-sw graphics.

Could be a logic board problem. I had a problem recently where I kept
getting a kernel panic whenever I'd try to turn on the airport card.
Eventually, the computer (also an ibookG4) quit starting. I'd get the
startup tone, but no video; but it looked like the power was on.

Like you, I removed the battery, then re-inserted it and was able to
restart. But the good times didn't last. The computer became less and
less willing to start up. After trying everything I knew, I took it in,
and they very quickly diagnosed it as a bad logic board. Several days
later, I was up and running with a new logic board (and an Applecare
warranty).

Sorry to hear that.

Quality products do not come from Chinese sweatshops.
Are you listening, Apple?

Except for this one problem waking up,
my iBook G4 has/is running flawlessly.
Never had any OS panics/crashes.

Could just be this computer. I've had crappy luck with this particular
machine. In one year, I've had two logic board replacements and an
optical drive replacement. That's more hardware problems than my other 8
Macs combined.

More info...
The sleeping white LED didn't turn on.
The screen went blank.
The iBook stayed warm, heard drive chatter briefly.
OS may have crashed when the screensaver started
or while trying to sleep (?).

I had a similar problem a few months ago with my ibook bought at the
same time (sept 05) .
I took it to the  Apple Genius Bar and they sent it out to be
repaired.
The on/off switch would not turn the computer on. There was a small
wire like part that had malfunctioned.  It as something to do with
waking the computer up from the "sleep mode".
I am sorry that I do not know the term for it.
I do know though that it is readily available online as a replacement
part and it is not expensive.
I also suspect that it is not difficult to replace
Sincerely,
Ron Bennett
