Hi, all, as per my earlier posts.  I guess I'm going to shuck out the $
for Unison.  I'm not sure how well it's working with Aioe.org but
anyway I tried to reply to something a while ago and it failed so this
is sort of a test.  FWIW it does seem to like voiceover and zoom
though.  I was really excited about OSXnews as I support developers and
the guy had some good ideas making the UI like Mail.app but alas seems
to have memory leaks and I'm jones'n for usenet access again.  Hope
this goes through.

Unison is a great newsgroup reader...FOR ME TO POOP ON!

It's software for retards.

Ok, well....thanks, but why do you *not* like it?  should I keep
troubleshooting MacosXnews?  Hey, I'm a tightwad anyway.  If I keep
having trouble with connecting to aioe.org I may just continue google.
Free is always better.

One other thing, I'm not so sure unison handles offline reading.
Whenever i click on a group or article to read it seems it has to
connect to the server.  Not a good thing for me.  That was one of my
biggest requirements.

I so miss Halime, just don't know why it quit connecting to aioe all
the sudden.

Aioe.org has now been out of the air for almoste a month. I seems the owner
is travelling.

I think if you like Unison you should stick with it. I don't think the
post you are replying to is worth consideration.

I tried Unison a while back and I felt it had some very excellent
aspects to it especially the way it displays the group list in a
columnar fashion like the view that arrived with OS X.

I think there's a chance that this thread will have some other
suggestions for newsreaders so I'm going to suggest the one I use; this
just happens to be the one I like best, but I think you should try out
a several yourself and pick the one you like best.

Okay, the one I like best is Hogwasher which you can get here:

This is a very full feature newsreader indeed and so it is worth
spending quite a bit of time with it to find out all the things it
offers.

As well as Usenet I find Hogwasher to be excellent for email discussion
lists.

Here are a few of the things it has:

A thread map which is a window showing the current thread as a map of
little circles and squares with each joined up according to which
follows from which.

Extensive filtering capabilities and will display only replied-to
messages of course, in addition you get filters to label messages by
any colour you like depending on criteria set in the filter.

You can filter into archives and create as many archives as you like.
There is a ready-made archive which keeps a copy of all "Sent"
postings.

Full online and offline operation retaining all header info from one
session to the next for each message.

Ability to combine newsgroups to be displayed together in one article
listing window with cross-posts eliminated to one posting. So for
example you can create a listing window displaying the headers for all
the newsgroups on the Mac relevant to you, but you won't be hassled by
the frequent cross-posting in those newsgroups because there won't be
cross-posting duplication in that single article window.

From the special archive for "Sent" postings you can cancel articles
after you've sent them and supersede them if you wish, with an updated
posting. This won't always work because of the difference with servers
sometimes, but I find it works very frequently.

Multiple identities can be created along with as many signatures as you
like. You can match identities with different newsgroups and have
different signatures for different newsgroups. You can even have it
randomly select signatures from those you've created if you like.

Extensive scheduling capabilities, so you can get it to download
overnight for example, or maybe just check to see if anything new has
come in every half hour or so if you prefer.

Ok, thanks for the info on Hogwasher, I did try it and have one
problem.  When composing it doesn't allow mac osx's zoom to track the
cursor.  Mail.app also has this problem too, hopefully apple will fix
that.

So, so far I've got unison, like interface but doesn't seem to do
offline.  MacOSXnews, which really is perfect if I can get on a public
news server that works to make sure it works.  It does offline and
plays nice with zoom and voiceover.  I just need to find a different
news server to test this stuff.  It may be that I continue using halime
though it's unsupported.  hey if it works good for me, may be my only
alternative

Thanks for all your info and I'll be happy to look at other options
too.

I really hope I don't sound too picky, but I do have some unorthodox
requirements.

Ok you may have led me to the holy grail of newsreaders.  Excep one big
problem.  No voiceover support whatsoever.  It reads the buttons but
won't read the article texts.  in posting, zoom won't track either
while typing (no biggie I'm using yattanews which won't allow posts
anyway (at least until aioe comes back online.

One small step closer

I hope that I have it right when I guess that you have a visual
impairment of some sort which is why you require these features. This
is just a guess of mine and if I'm way off track then I do apologise.

I don't know anything about the voiceover or behaviour of Mac zoom with
Hogwasher and if they don't work with it then unfortunately I can't
help.

I will mention that there is one regular poster here called Erik
Richard Sørensen who is very knowledgeable indeed about using Macs with
a visual impairment. You may want to discuss best newsreader for you
with him perhaps.

One man's retarded software is another man's great music. And a great
song it is, almost an anthem:

Cheers
