I want to upgrade the HDD in my Imac G3 to a larger one. Right now
there is a 20 gig one in there, I am assuming that is is a 5400 rpm
drive. Can I swap it a 7200?? or would that run too hot for the Imac???

There's a good chance that a modern 7200 rpm drive will consume less
power than the old 20 you've got now!  Dropping a 7200 RPM 80gb drive
in the machine will improve things.  Depending on the model you have
(slot load? early tray load?) getting the drive swapped out can be a
minor pain in the a.s.

Lotsa places to check on the net for drives -- I like
http://www.newegg.com

You can get an 80gb drive with an 8mb cache for under $50.

If you don't have an external USB case for your old drive, pick one up!

That way you can put the new drive in the external case, format it, and
use a utility like Super Duper (you do back up your system regularly?)
to transfer all your stuff from the old drive to the new one.  Then
swap the drives, and you're in business.
