I have just installed OSX 10.0.2 on my iMac G3 333Mhz Lifesaver. I was
so trilled that I finally got up to speed and to be on OSX. All of the
apps that I dreamed would be able to run on my iMac would finally be
there. In my fit of excitment I rushed to Mozilla.com. I couldn't wait
to get my favorite browser loaded. So I proudly clicked on the "X" and
proceeded to download. I was stoked. Then a screen came up asking mw
what app to use to open the dmg file. I was just going to put it on the
desktop. Desktop was greyed out as an option. Unless I chose to "save
file as..." so I did.I was a little rusty I figured, no problem. Then
to my extreme dismay the file sat there with a big ugly "E" for
Internet Explorer. I figured at this point things were wrong. But just
to confirm my fear I double clicked that bad boy! As I suspected a
bunch of encrypted jargon came up tucked neatly inside IE window.
Now here is my question: Some other groups have said that 10.0.2 can
not handle firefox, is that the case? If this is the case, can someone
please prove it to me. Can someone tell me just one program ( I do not
even care what it does ) that will install on 10.0.2 and how to get it?
I am lusting for some success with this OS X. Because I have had
nothing but stinking failure.

10.0.2 (Cheetah) is *really* old and up-to-date OS X software probably
won't run properly, if at all. The earliest functional version should
be considered to be 10.2 (Jaguar).

You *could* start by reading the system requirements om the site you
downloaded Firefox from ...
http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/system-requirements.html
Hrmm.. that page says 10.3 while the release notes say 10.2 is required.

10.0.2 is a beta release. It was offered as beta and was mostly
for developers.
I strongly suggest finding a copy of 10.3 (Panther). This release
was the most efficient on older systems and since it is one OS
release back from the current (10.4 Tiger), and you should be able
to find it very inexpensively.

I see this claim a lot. It isn't true. Many people consider Mac OS X
10.0 a beta release in retrospect, and the quality certainly wasn't
present, but it was a full release.

But wasn't 10.0.1 the first release that a normal user could actually
get hold of? For 10.0 you had to be a registered developer or something?
I got my first Apple laptop with 10.0.1 (iirc) because that was the
first time I could run my unix stuff on an Apple laptop.

Get at least 10.2. 10.0.x is, simply, crap. 10.1.x is better, but that's not
difficult. 10.3.x might be pushing it on your machine unless you've maxed the
RAM.

Without reading anything else, I can tell you right now that you won't
be happy with it. 10.0 had a lot of bugs and missing features. Most of
today's OS X apps aren't even compatible with it.
The most recent version of Mac OS X that is compatible with a "five
flavors" iMac/G3 is 10.3.9. I strongly recommend you get a copy of 10.3
(and then use Software Update to bring it up to 10.3.9) And max out your
RAM to 512M, if you haven't already done so. OS X works much better if
you give it a lot of RAM.
The latest release of Mac OS X is 10.4, but that version isn't supported
on your iMac, since it doesn't have built-in FireWire ports.

From what I know being outside Mac World, 10.0 OS X was so buggy and
unstable so 10.1 OS X was kind of "free upgrade". Not exactly free but
very, very cheap.
There is a site specializes on such machines (in fact, everything)
which has a very friendly owner and community, I think you should seek
help there:
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/
It can't be _that_ bad but I suspect OS X 10.0 is like Windows ME.
10.2.8 and in fact every newer OS can run, just turn off bells and
whistles I suppose. E.g. turn off Dash Board like many of us.
You better review that site
