Two french laboratories, Analytica and l’Institut national de l’environnement
industriel et des risques (Inéris) say the Mac Pro leaks dangerous fumes,
amongst which, benzene, a chemical which affects the bone marrow and may cause
leukemia.

Apple says Steve Job's shares fare well and there can't be a problem. G5 don't
leak either.

French studies, you know... Take a deep breath! Macs are top quality, that's
what you pay big money for.

France, eh?  I wonder if they compared the amount of benzene from a Mac
to the benzene from Perrier ??

I was really afraid when I read that the water was bottled in 1989!!! but the
story dates back to 1990...

"William M. Grigg, a spokesman for the Food and Drug Administration, said his
agency's Hazard Evaluation Board had collected samples of Perrier and found no
immediate risk to the public from the benzene in the water.

"At these levels there is no immediate hazard,'' he said. ''The hazard would
be that over many years, if you consumed about 16 fluid ounces a day, your
lifetime risk of cancer might increase by one in a million, which we consider
a negligible risk. You don't have to be concerned if you just had a bottle of
Perrier."

Still, Perrier has a name -- their water was used as a reference for tests in
this story! -- and they recalled the whole stock of bottles.

Apple won't do the same. If you die from leukemia ten years from now, who will
be able to trace the cause to the Mac Pro?

Steve's shares are safe.

My ability to read French is very limited.  But it appears that one
machine was creating a strong odor that irritated eyes, nose and throat.
And that this effect was very pronounced after a week of using the Macpro.

So this suggests that if your Macpro doesn't reek, you are probably
safe.

It also appears that one of the labs, Analytica, works closely with
Greenpeace.  This does not enhance their credibility in my view.

I'm not ruling out the possibly that the report is true, but I'm highly
skeptical and will need to see systematic replication and analysis from
more credible sources before paying much attention to this.

Of course, I may be misreading the article entirely.  I took second year
French in high school (never having taken first year French) and that is
about it.

Cheers,

-j

The one that was sent for replacement had the same problem.

You think Greenpeace credibility is poor? Anyways, Analytica just made an
analysis and, generally, when the results go public, labs don't like to look
like fools. The result has also been checked by Inéris.

You may be skeptical, I have no problem with this, but we already know that
G5s leak. Many Apple computers heat and now... some apparently also release
toxic fumes. Maybe Mac users should stop pretending that PCs are cheap stuff,
don't you think?

The article, which claims that Mac Pros emit toxic fumes, seems to be
missing some crucial information. Of course, toxic fumes are toxic
fumes, can't get around that, but I think what's more important,
especially in articles like this, is what kind of concentrations are
we talking about? I haven't managed to find any kind of information
from anywhere about *how much* the machine that they tested pumped out
toxic stuff.

This is why I'm skeptical, since the tests, associated with
Greenpeace, given their past records of doing things, with a "fear-
mongering" article that shouts that your machine will give you cancer,
but without any kind of information other than "we detected *some*
stuff". Of course, since we're talking about computers that you work
on for longer whiles at, and the possibility that you might get
cancer, and you don't really know if it's true or not, will pretty
easily get anybody on their toes, especially since Mac Pros aren't
normal "run of the mill" -computers.

Or maybe you're in the wrong newsgroup. The advocacy group is down the
hall.

Priam is a known troll; the best thing to do with him is to ignore or KF
