How do I restore a folder I can't see?
I need to restore my mysql data directory - /usr/local/mysql/data.
I know Time Machine has been backing it up because if I go to the
command line as root and CD through the time machine folders, I can
find it. But I can't see it in the Time Machine app.
I've tried manually restoring with the cp command or the rsync
command, but it never works right. The files copy, but something about
the copy doesn't allow mysql to start again - for example mysql
complains it doesn't have permission, even though the file has the
right owner and permission flags as far as I can see.
What can I do?

Use the Finder's "Go" menu to display the hidden folder (you specify the
complete path to the desired folder). Once the proper folder is
displayed, activate the Time Machine to roll back to the appropriate
time.

It worked. Thanks for the help.
Although I have to admin, I'm a little pissed off that I couldn't just
copy the files with cp or rsync. (Or rather, that I could do such a
copy, but it didn't work).

Open a new Finder window, then use the Go To Folder command (on the Go
menu, or Shift-Command-G) to navigate to /usr/local/mysql or elsewhere.
Then "Enter Time Machine" will begin there.
