Strange happenings on New York Times site (nyt.com) in Safari

For many months now, when I leave Safari on nyt.com, I will come back
later and find several (from a few to dozens) of new windows open, all
blank, with no content. The URL in each will be something like
http://graphicx8.nytimes.com/feedroom/nytc3. Each will have a slightly
different URL, but all following this pattern. nyt.com refreshes
itself automatically, like so many news sites; in this case, I seem to
be getting some kind of glitchy new window. Now, this doesn't happen
all the time. Sometimes I'll wake up in the morning and there will be
no extra screens, just the up-to-the-minute Times news. Other times
I'll have dozens. nyt.com is my homepage, not surprisingly, and it's
often where I leave Safari at night. I e-mailed The Times about it and
they suggested emptying the Safari cache, but that hasn't helped.
Their tech contact told me he'd never heard of this particular
problem. I've talked to my ISP (ATT Yahoo), but they're not familiar
with it. I haven't seen this happen on any other site, but I can't
recall leaving anything but nyt.com on the screen. I'm running a newer
iMac with 10.4.9, all updates current. Any thoughts?

Just one thought:

I am so glad I use Firefox with AdBlock Plus and never have to see that
sort of nonsense!  : )

How do you know it's an ad? On my work computer, I don't have this
problem, and nyt.com never serves me up ads. Besides, this isn't
happening when I like though to a sub-page; it happens while I'm not
even at my computer and the nyt.com homepage is up.

I don't know either way, but I suspect it is related to ads, because web
sites like that often try to open windows behind the current window to
display ads. It's very common.

It's not just because the "Disable Pop-Up windows" option in the
Safari menu has been toggled?

While I haven't seen that sort of behavior on the NYT website, I see
it regularly on the Boston Globe (boston.com/news/globe) website. And,
yes, that is with "Block Pop-up Windows" turned on.
