I want to experiment and install from an external drive so its faster.
If I make a mistake, an erase and install should be a lot faster. Also,
I want to try taking stuff off the install image to see if it still
functions.
Has anyone been able to install the OS from an external USB or Firewire
hard drive instead of the DVD?

Which OS? Instructions for converting a Tiger DVD to a disk partition
were posted some time ago. I tried it and it worked, but I didn't save
the directions when I moved to Leopard since I only have the upgrade DVD
and not the retail product.

I need it for Leopard but perhaps if that hasn't been done yet I could
try it with Tiger. I couldn't find any posts regarding this in the last
10,000.

Yes, works like a champ and _much_ faster than the DVD for installing n
other disks. However, the longest part of any install will still be
copying files from a previous user, if you do that.
The basics for 10.5 (if that's what you really wanted to know): Make a
~10GB partition on an external FW drive. With Disk Utility, make a .cdr
disk image (that's DVD/CD Master disk format) on your internal boot
drive (or wherever else you want to put it except the target installer
partition). Again with DU, 'Restore' the .cdr to the installer
partition. Mount the installer partition and make sure the mounted name
is exactly the same as the real installer disk.

just ignore the cautions for 10.4 and having to use a PPC Mac.
