Normally the Time Machine checks every hour to see what files have
changed in the last hour and then backs up the files that have
changed. But what happens if the Time Machine disk drive is not
available for several hours or even several days?  Can the Time
Machine software keep track of all files that have changed over a 2 or
3 day period and then backup all files that changed over a 2 or 3 day
period?

That's right, but only the last change since the drive was taken off
line.

"Last change" could be misinterpreted; better to say "last version of
each changed file."

Sure.  Time Machine itself isn't keep track of file changes.  It
apparently uses file system metadata to determine what files have
changed since the last backup. regardless of how long ago that was.

I have noticed an idiosyncrasy when using Time Machine.  When Time
Machine is activated and my iMac is not used for a long time the iMac
doesn't go to sleep. Instead the screen blanks and the computer keeps
running.  Have others noticed similar behavior?  Does this behavior
mean if I want an iMac to go to sleep when it is not used for a long
time I should deactivate Time Machine?

i am *not* using TM, and i have noticed this behavior post-upgrade. it
wont sleep. and if i manually put it to sleep via Apple menu or power
button, it wakes up seconds later. no movement on the mouse, etc. this
didnt happen pre-upgrade.

tho i did notice that running Parallels would prevent the mac from
sleeping.
