I'm running OSX10.9.3 on a Mac G4 with CD/RW. I have a file of 4GB
size that I would like to put on multiple CD's in sequence. Is there a
way to do this. I have Toast 6 {OSX} on the HD. Any help is
appreciated.

A quick search at macupdate.com and versiontracker.com disclosed pif
splitter
<http://www.noixdecroco.com/htm/appli.php?lang=en>
and Splitter
<http://www.thepropellerheads.com/software/splitter/splitter.html>
The documentation for Splitter reveals that there is a BSD command
called "split" which will let you do this from the command line.

You're most likely really running 10.3.9, but I think you knew that.
Toast won't help you. There are a few products that will do
"multi-volume" backup of files across CDs or DVDs.
Retrospect -- commercial backups software formerly from DANTZ (now from
EMC). If you use this to backup stuff, you'll also need it to restore
it.
You could conceivably create a segmented PAX archive via the command
line and burn the parts to CDR using Toast. Are you up for that?
Here's some links on MacOS X backups. Most of them discuss backing up
whole systems, not large files. You may well be SOL on this but
alternately, you could buy a DVD writer. They're relatively cheap for
desktops. Try Small Dog Electronics.

Note that most of the backup testing was under 10.4 which limits what
you can use under 10.3.

Actually Toast 8 will do that - it splits large (quantities of) files to
multiple disks and adds a "recovery" tool on each disk.
If you insert one of the disks you can double-click the tool, select the
file(s) you want to copy back and then it will prompt you to insert the
required disks in sequence.

I HATE the Toast 8 interface. Plus it seems slower to me on my Dual
1GHz G4. I went back to Toast 7 and am there to stay.

Yeah, the 'eye candy' of the interface certainly is noticeably slower, I
don't think burning speed is adversely affected though (I'm also using a
Dual 1GHz G4).
Cheers,
Andy.

Toast 7 supports multi-disc backups too.
Select "Data" and set the format to "Mac Only". Also set the disc type
popup (next to the "burn" button" to the type of disc you'll be using
(CD, DVD, or DVD DL). As you add files to the Toast window, the left
drawer will tell you how many discs it'll need.

There are several ways to do this.
In no particular order:
SilverKeeper
SuperDuper!
Retrospect
Backup
If the files are music files or something else iTunes knows, iTunes.
Newer versions of Toast can do this. I don't know about v6.
Going to VersionTracker and doing a search on 'backup cd' will be helpful.
