I know this to be a good computer. Whether it is suitable to one's
needs is another question.

It depends on what you expect from it.

Note that there are three different 1.83 GHz iMac Intel models, and the
oldest one is significantly better than the other two.

The Early 2006 model (MA199LL, model ID "iMac4,1") has a Core Duo
processor, a SuperDrive (able to write DVDs) and ATI Radeon X1600
graphics hardware. This allows it to run more advanced graphics software
and saves memory compared to the other models. It supports Bluetooth and
its hard drive will be at least 160 GB.

The Mid 2006 model (MA406LL, model ID "iMac4,2") has a Core Duo
processor, a Combo drive (able to write CDs but only read DVDs) and
Intel integrated graphics (GMA950). It doesn't support Bluetooth
(without external add-on hardware) and its hard drive may be as small as
80 GB.

The Late 2006 model (MA710LL, model ID "iMac5,2") has a Core 2 Duo
processor and its hard drive will be at least 160 GB, but is otherwise
identical to the Mid 2006 model.

And they say I'm bashing Apple! Hey, people, get your Mac before it
turns into a desktop dummy!

*blinks* Was that supposed to make some sense? How have any of these
turned into a 'desktop dummy'? Or do you expect computer companies to
wait a couple years in-between updating their models? Is that what you
mean? :-D

Why are you responding to him?  He's a known troll, and you are playing
right into his hands.  Stop that.

Cheer up, mate!  We've all been there, including JR.  Look at how many
responses he'd made to trolls before finding religion.  <gd&r>

Hey, dummy. You didn't notice: they didn't upgrade their models, they
*downgraded* them. I'm surprised none of the M&Ms who answered your
post brought you back to your senses.

What are you rabbiting on about, or are you just trying to be an idiot?

The first model I described was the orignal 17" iMac Intel.

The second 1.83 GHz model was a new model which was introduced in the
middle of 2006, at a lower price point. (It was intended to be an
education model, but also sold to the general public who wanted to get
an iMac for as cheap as possible and were willing to sacrifice a few
features.)

The third 1.83 GHz model was a minor update of the second one. At the
same time, the first model was upgraded to a 2 GHz Core 2 Duo model with
the same or better features, and at the same price point as the original
model.

Yeah, they lower the price and downgrade the model. That's not what I
call lowering the price. Lowering the price is buying without the
Apple tax, in other words, buying a PC.

For almost anything the consumer - pro-sumer might want to do, yes I do
:-)
