So when i first set up this new MacBook and set the Airport dealie to
'Default' it immediately connected me to the Internet... Even though i
didn't have a Internet Account...!!!
So i was feeling very guilty about this, and i've been asking around
in my rather tiny apartment building ( 6 other tenants ) and no one
seems to have an Airport of --?-- transmitter...???
So NOW-- i've been checking on the Airport icon in the toolbar and
it's displaying SEVERAL accounts...
Three of them seem to work without a password, while Two of them
require one...
Where are they coming from...???
i live on a corner, so if the range is fairly short, it would have to
be in the house next door, and they're hillbillies... i wouldn't want
to suggest that hillbillies are necessarily computer illiterate, but
they just don't seem to be able to wear their pants on frontways
front, in a consistent manner.
There is a church across the kitty corner, but that's 200 feet away at
best...???
i'm beginning to think that if these 'administrators' don't know how
to secure their wifi !!! Wifi. that's what it's called...!!! accounts
properly, then the heck with them.
i'll let Jesus or Allah decide how many weekends i have to spend in
hades for this.

Depending on a lot of factors, they could be at least 300 feet away.

Magic Wifi faries? Seriously, they're coming from somebody else's house
or apartment. If you really want to know where they're from, pick up
your MacBook and walk around outside while watching to see if the signal
strength goes up or down. Eventually you should be able to narrow it
down.

That makes sense to me, however you should be aware it may be illegal in
your area. Laws on this are not consistent or well-defined in many
cases, but there have been cases of people being prosecuted for doing
this.

Farther than you might expect. My mini picks up strong signals from at
least 75 yards.

Realize that the signals you are picking up on your macbook can be
coming from _any_ wifi transmitter, and are probably not coming from
an Apple Airport transmitter.
As far as distance, I live in a neighborhood of single family houses,
and have only three houses closer than 200 feet. I think I can see 5
signals that aren't my own, typically. (Though they are all protected
- bad luck for me when my internet goes down occasionally!)

If you want to set up wifi, and don't care about protecting your
signal, that is probably easier than putting on a pair of pants.

Or, maybe they just don't care very much.
