I've had no luck trying to find an online 'how-to' for updating the firmware
of a FW drive with Oxford chipset. Can someone please point me in the right
direction?

It's all about updating firmware in Superdrives. No mention of any kind of
hard drive.

I've downloaded what is supposedly the updater from the above page but, when
unstuffed, the folder contains only a 'Data' folder and no software. I've
done this three times always with the same result. Also, the page says the
updaters are only for OWC-branded drives but I was willing to give it a
shot, but can't.

I did find firmware updaters for various Oxford chipsets here:

http://fwdepot.com/firewiredepot/firmware/firmware.html

How do I find out if my drive has 900, 901, 901+, 912 or 922 chipset? System
Profiler and Disk Utility make no mention of ship version.

Sorry for the useless link. For some reason, OWC's StuffIt archive lacks
the uploader utility itself. OWC's support has gotten rather slipshod in
recent years. The uploader is from Oxford and works with most of their
FireWire bridge chips, regardless of the brand of enclosure they're
housed in.

As indicated on that FireWire Depot instruction page, the uploader lists
the Oxford chip type and firmware version in the "Current Selected
Device" box. Before you launch the updater, make sure that only the
FireWire device you want to update is connected (to a built-in FireWire
port) and that all volumes on it are unmounted.

Just curious: is there a particular problem you are trying to resolve
by updating the firmware?

Yes. This is from my post titled "MacBook Pro FW Problem" from a couple of
days ago.
