hello,
I've noticed on several macs (laptops and desktops) that burning cd's
or dvd's is slow compared to a pc with winXP.
Why is that?

I had to burn ISO images from a download and it took over 1 hour to
run.  On PC, it took about 30 minutes or so.

Just wondering,

Nah - I have used Mac OS and Windows for years and there's not much
difference in speed.

Chances are you are comparing older Macs with newer PCs with newer and
faster CD/DVD drives.

The Macs you used were likely older than the PC, and since they were
older, they had an older, slower CD/DVD drives.  It's probably just
that simple.

Most likely the PC you used had a faster DVD burner than the Macs.

Most Macs have slot-loading drives which are inherently slower (both
read and write) than the tray-loading drives that most PCs have.

My Dual 1GHz G4 (ca. 1999?) came with a Pioneer-104 DVD writer.  It took
over 45 minutes to burn single layer DVDs.  I replaced it with a 110D
and it now takes less than 30 minutes for a dual layer DVD (without
verification).

Yes, drives have gotten faster over the past few years. My G4 iMac came
with a 2x burner...the dual G5 came with a 4x burner, replaced with an
8x burner (when I wore it out)...the MacBook Pro's slot loader is a 6x,
and the Mac Pro's tray-loader is a 16x.

BTW, I _hate_ slot-loaders, so I have external tray-loading burners
(16x) to use with any of my 4 Macs. 16x DVD burns take about 5 minutes
(less than 10 if you do the "verify" pass).

Eh? How is speed inherently related to the laoding mechanism? Certainly
particular drives are slower than particular other drives. But I rather
doubt that it has anything to do with the loading mechanism.

By the way, though I realize you did say "most", I have slot drives on
most of my Windows boxes; I like the slot ones better. But then, I'm not
most people. Yes, I know that most PCs do have the trays.

It could be due the fact that OS X defaults to "verify disk after
burning" and Windows doesn't.

Also OS X sometimes optimizes/defrags the disk image before burning. It
could be problem on slow CPU/HD and low mem Macs.

It could also be basically slow CD/DVD burner (or outdated firmware,
run software update) too.

That PC sounds pretty slow. My Mac (and it's three years old) burns a
complete single-layer DVD in under five minutes.
