System sounds and iTunes playback level

Can the volume level of the OS (10.4.9) system alert sounds be set to a
different, lower level than that of the iTunes music playback level?

Or are the two inevitably linked together - as they seem to be on my G4
Quicksilver.
I know iTunes has it's own volume slider but the system control in the
menu bar seems to over ride this.

Alert volume, system volume, and iTunes volume are all separate controls.

Take a look in System Preferences > Sound. Click the Sound Effects tab
to adjust the "Alert volume". You can adjust the system volume with the
slider on the very bottom called "Output volume".

If you set the Output volume to maximum and the iTunes volume to
minimum (muted) do you still hear music playing in iTunes?

If you set the Alert volume to minimum (muted) and the iTunes volume to
maximum, do you hear music playing in iTunes?
