Messed up internet connection

I have an iMac flat panel G5 connected to the internet via a router.  
Also connected via the same router is a PC.  Occasionally the DSL
internet connection will go off.  If I try to connect during that time I
get the message "No Internet Connection".  However once it is again
active (and I usually reboot the router) the PC will pick up the
connection, but the Mac continues to give the same message "No Internet
Connection".  I have tried everything I can think of, but the only way I  
can get the Mac to re-connect is to re-boot it.  

Does anyone know if there is a way to re-connect the Mac without having
to re-boot?

Have you tried logging out and logging back in again?

How do your computer get their IP addresses?  Does the router act as a
DHCP server or have you manually assigned addresses?  If the former, you
can try going into System Preferences > Network > Ethernet > and click
on "Renew DHCP Lease."  Although this should happen automatically.

Also, your DSL connection should be constant-on.  Losing  the link is
indicative of a problem with your router, the phone lines in your house,
the phone line to the pole, the copper pair to the central office, the
wiring in the central office or the DSLAM itself.  Contact your phone
company or whomever maintains the DSLAM to have your connection checked.  
If that doesn't fix it, complain about a noisy phone line and have the
POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) come out and check your line.  I had
endless trouble with my DSL service until the POTS guy came out, checked
my phone line, found it to be crappy, and switched it to a better copper
pair.  The Qwest DSL department wizards were clueless.

Thanks for your suggestions. My router does act as a DHCP server -- I
had tried the "renew DHCP in the system preferences -- didn't work.

I think I do have a sorry DSL connection,-- that's another issue.  Be
that as it may,  since it does  occasionally loose the constant on
connection, the PC will reconnect without having to re-boot, the Mac
must be re-booted-- this is my grip.  There should be a way to get the
Mac to again detect the signal without having to re-boot it.

Have you examined the system and console logs immediately following
such a disconnect event to see if any errors are reported there?
