I have a Power Book ande I am trying to copy everything from it, to a
MacBook (with enough space).

Every thing is on a external HD and I need to copy the majority of
files and applications from it to my new Mac Book.  Can I use the
migration assistant to do this ?  It's using a USB 2 cable (the HD)
!!!!

If I have to do this manually will this be a total knightmare ?

(Or should I pop over to Best Buy tomorrow and buy a firewire cable ?)

Thanks.

If you have firewire on the PowerBook and you don't mind buying a cable
AND you want the easiest, fastest, and most trouble free way.  Don't
even think twice.  Get the cable.

I have no idea what the limitations of migration assistant are (i.e.
whether it will see this external HD, even with the firewire cable).
However, I can tell you I've done this sort of thing manually several
times and it is really no big deal. Just be careful not to overwrite
prefs and apps and folders installed already on the MacBook. m.

Migration assistant works with any OSX box that can go into Target Mode,
and I believe all OS X's require firewire to install. I am not saying
that right, but.... it is a beautiful thing. Nothing much to keep track
of. I have done it about 5 times in the last few months, once for my
MacBookPro, and others for friends.

AFAIK, target mode works only via firewire.

I've used Migration Assistant a number of times with a client's hard
drive from, say, a G3 or a tray loading iMac, temporarily installed in a
Firewire case, never a problem.

If you have an Ethernet cable, you might try using that one, and afp or
ftp (in Finder/Go/Connect to Server) or ssh (using say Fugu).
