Tiger for Power Mac G4 - how much to bid on eBay?

Hello,

Before bidding gets crazy on this item, I'd like to get a
sanity check on how high should be considered a reasonable
bid. If I win the auction, the OS will go on my G4/1.5GHz AGP
graphics ("Sawtooth") system. I currently run OS 9.2.2.

I'm the current high bidder for this at 22 British Pounds
(approx. $ 41.73 USD). While I realize that this is a great
value, my funds are limited, and I'll still want to purchase
and install a second internal HD where the OS will live.

How high is high enough for the sw? How high is too high?
I'm very interested to know, as the prospect of acquiring
and using Tiger is mighty appealing :)

Thanks,
Eric

If everyone who read your question actually costed their time at only
one cent, and could donate that money, then you'd be able to buy hundreds
of new copies!

My feeling is that 2/3 of the original price should keep you happy.

Looks good and reasonable, and I have a close idea of how much
that would amount to, based on store prices.

Thanks!

What version of Tiger are you bidding on?

There are two types, one will work on your computer and the other won't.
Type one is the the version that came with a particular computer model,
this will only work with this model. Type two is purchased version this
will work with all models of computers that are listed as being able to
run Tiger.

How much memory do you have on your G4? Tiger likes a lot to run
purrrfectly.

This is version 10.4 for Power Mac G3/G4/G5. My G4 has 1.37GB of physical
RAM, and a single 1.5GHz processor. My understanding is that the
machine is about as OS X ready as it'll ever be (though I still want to
upgrade the graphics card). I'm hoping Tiger will find this a happy home.

Thanks,
Eric

"This is version 10.4 for Power Mac G3/G4/G5" doesn't tell me that this
is a commercial version.

Please make sure this version is the commercial version, not a version
that came with a particular computer. You may be out a lot of money for
nothing.

If the picture eBay shows gray disks, beware! Any Tiger release disks that
are gray are keyed to a specific line of hardware and will not install on
other hardware.

It's a full install of OS X 10.4.2. I just had another look at the ad.
Yes, the DVDs are gray. The seller says the install pack is for a Power
Mac, but the seller owns a G5 iMac, so can't use it. Says this is a full
install originally from a Power Mac, but has never been used or
registered. There's a photo of all contents, and text says it comes
with both installation DVDs, paperwork, manuals, and warranty,
license agreement, support guide and service guide, and Welcome
to Tiger booklet.

I'll still inquire of the seller if it will indeed work on my model.

Thanks,
Eric

That is not a retail copy of Tiger but an OEM set that came with a Mac.
There is no guarantee that it will install or run on your G4. The last
G5 iMacs came with 10.4.2, so it sounds like the sellers iMac was an
earlier model that came with 10.3 and he found that it wouldn't work
with this OEM 10.4 installer from a later model. That makes it even less
likely that it will work on your rather elderly G4. It sounds like the
seller is trying to recoup the cost of a mistaken purchase. If you "win"
this auction, you may end up doing the same thing.

This statement makes no sense:

My reason for sale is that I have an imac g5, but not a powermac g5,
THIS INSTALL PACK IS FOR A POWERMAC

This tells me this is not a retail OS X Tiger disks, but a machine
specific disks. If it was retail version it can be installed on any Mac
that can handle Tiger.

Says this is a full
> install originally from a Power Mac, but has never been used or
> registered.

Again this statement: "This is a full install originally from a powermac"

Leads me to the conclusion that this is a machine specific OS X, and
will only work with the same type of Mac that the disks came from.

Well, this certainly does suck. This is the lowest-priced Tiger on eBay,
but I should still be able to find a good deal. I'll just bail out of the
auction, and save myself a lot of headache and money wasted.

Thanks,
Eric

List price in the US is $129.  Figure out how much you can afford, and
figure out what a used/open-box software (assuming that the item on eBay
is used/open-box) is worth to you, compared to a new one.  Set the lower
of those two items as your maximum limit.

Can't afford new list price, hence my search on eBay ;) I've fixed a top
price I'm willing to pay in my head, so that's sorted. Just have to watch
the auction, which ends on 9/2. As long as both install DVDs are intact
and useable, I'll be happy.

Now to find an inexpensive HD for the new OS...another trip to eBay.

Thanks,
Eric
