One of my start up items is Butler. This time, the program started ok,
but the little window that says "Starting up Butler" got stuck, and is
still there. How do I get rid of it? I don't see any obvious button.

Can't you force quit it?

I don't want to quit Butler, just get rid of the window that says
"staring butler". Usually it goes away by itself.

No, of course you don't want to quit Butler. But the symptom that you
described is that of a program that has crashed during launch and needs
to be forced to quit. If this is /not/ the case additional information
will be required ("The program started and functions normally, but the
'Starting Butler' window remained on the display,") e.g.

Then someone will likely reply "Quit the program and throw away the
preferences file," or words to that effect.

Well I oculdn't figure out how to get rid of just that window, so I did
quit and restart Butler. It was fine the next time, although the
position of the Butler icon in the top bar got messed up. That too will
get fixed when I restart the computer which I don't want to do now.
