I have not been able to use Mail as my mail application because I can't
send mail through my Verizon DSL.
I have seen mention of this problem, and figure I am raising an old
issue, but does anyone have a fix?

Are you sure you have Mail's prefs set up correctly? You must specify
the use of authentication when sending mail. m.

What's the primary method you connect to the Internet? DSL or another
connection?
Most ISPs require their customers to be "on their network" in order to
use their services like news server or email. The only other
alternative is web-based email.
If your email client (Apple's Mail.app or something else?) can't connect
to Verizon's mail service, have you tried contacting their support line?
You are paying for this service, after all, and entitled to support from
them to make it work. They might be requiring a username/password
combination to log into their email network. That's in the Accounts
panel in the Mail Preferences menu option.
If they won't support your machine, discuss termination of your contract
due to 'lack of performance' with the support rep (be sure to get their
name and take notes about the call with full time-stamps, etc.).

Verizon does not block Port 25. I use non-verizon SMTP all the time
for business purposes.

Michael was talking about off-net customers using the Verizon server,
not about accessing off-net servers from the DSL connection.

I use Mail.app and Verizon DSL to send mail. Here is the Outgoing
Mail Server (SMTP).
Outgoing Mail Server: outgoing.verizon.net
Server port: 25
SSL OFF (unchecked)
Authentication: Password (this is a popup menu)
Username: your.username (no @verizon.net)
Password: your verizon password

Do you get an error or a bounce. If an error, check Verizon's setup
page.
If your mail bounces or vanishes, ask Verizon to fix their totally
broken spam filter. It blocks legitimate mail from legitimate networks,
including abuse reports. Verizon will find itself isolated very quickly
with that kind of attitude. I'm firewalling Verizon from my server now
because I can't contact Verizon about hackers.

And hopefully they'll lose a lot of customers. I've replied to a couple
of Verizon users about some of my vinyl auctions on Ebay and I got
rejected. The only way I could reach them was through Ebay messages.

Who are they going to lose the customers to, Comcast? Have you seen all
the complaints about the spam filters on the Comcast help forum?

In my area of Southern Calif. using Verizon DSL and Mail just fine.
Be sure to double check your settings. I've noticed email probs
sometimes when Verizon has recenlty done work on their servers and
suddenly my ID does not work and must be reset. Are you seeing mail in
the Verizon email & more section, at: http://dslstart.verizon.net
Actually, spoke with tech dept yesterday, about no longer being able to
block senders or domain names, and that the tabs had vanished from the,
Verizon email & more section. The mac tech (sic) said,
oh yes, they are gone! I said why? Of course, he did not have any other
explanation except the standard: it is being worked on :]

Hi,
Try port 587, it is alternative SMTP port some ISPs started to use.
Also in a free time, check your IP at http://www.senderbase.org

If you are a Verizon customer you can use a news client program to get
access to the 0.verizon.* list of groups and interact with people
there that know the system.
You need to authenticate using your user name and password. Port 25.
There are some know issues with individual accounts becoming fudged
that can only be corrected by establishing a sub-account (second
e-mail address) and using that. I don't know why. The zero groups
above may offer some info.
Ther eis also a Mac-specific newsgroup maintained there for people
with Mac-related issues.
Keep in mind this is all user interaction. There is no official
support there from Verizon.
FWIW, I have no problems sending/receiving mail using my Verizon
account using Outlook Express, Claris E-mailer, MacSoup, MailSmith.

I use verizon (sadly), and have no trouble at all with Mail.
