Appple want startup disk permissions repaired from the DVD (To repair
your startup disk, start up from your Mac OS X Install disc (CD or DVD),
then choose Utilities>Disk Utility...).  What is missed if I just run DU
from the startp disk?  It seems to work OK and the one time I followed
Apple's directions nothing else was found.

No, you're confusing repairing the permissions with repairing the
volume.  To repair the volume, yes you do have to buut from a different
volume.

But to repair permissions, it is certainly possible, and even
recommended, to run the permission repair on the the desired volume
*while booted* in that volume.

Thanks for the clarification!  Apple's use of "repair" wasn't clear (to
me).
