Network problems after Security Update 2008-007

Hi all

I'mhoping someone can help me sort out the networking issues I'm
having on my iBook G4 (10.5.5) after applying the recent Security
Update 2008-007.

Basically all was fine before the update, and I ran software update
and it picked up iPhoto 7.1.5, Migration Assistant (I think), and
Security Update 2008-007. I installed them, it rebooted and now,
although it's connected to my wireless network fine it won't find any
internet sites and iTunes doesn't show any AirTunes speakers, or my
Apple TV in the devices list.

I've tried connecting via ethernet cable but that makes no difference.
I can log onto my router using wireless or ethernet and all is ok with
it. Plus other Macs and PCs on my network can connect to the internet
fine (hence this posting)

I couldn't find any answers on the net so I thought I'd restore from
my Time Machine backup which I've duely done, but the wierd thing is
that that has made no difference - it's still not connecting to the
internet etc... Do TM restores restore everything? But that's another
issue really...

My question is really where to start? As I said I can connect to the
router but not see any websites - that suggests a DNS issue to me, but
the fact that iTunes isn't seeing my AirTunes speaker (and my other
Macs/PCs can see it) is making me think it's something else... The
Network Diagnostics utility can't fix it.

All suggestions welcomed.

Thanks

Tim

Couple of things I'd try first off: open Terminal and see if you can ping
the Mac itself. Assuming you can, see if you can ping the router. Let us
know the results.

Another thing to check is to see if IPv6 has somehow got enabled and
configured. If it has, deactivate it and see if that helps.

Good questions, thanks Jim.

I can ping the router at 192.168.1.1 but not itself on 192.168.1.100.
I can ping my XP laptop for what it's worth.

IPv6 was set to automatic - I've turned it off and stopped and
restarted Airport but that hasn't helped. I'll reboot just in case
too...

Thanks

A quick update - after allowing all incoming connections in Prefs >
Security > Firewall it now gets an answer when pinging itself, and I
can also ping it from my XP laptop now.

And another update... iTunes now at least recognises my AirTunes
speakers but I get an "unknown error (-3256)" when tring to connect to
them. Also, the Apple TV is now recognised but when trying to sync
it's saying it can't sync certain bought tracks as I'm not authorised
to play them on this computer. I can't connect to the iTunes Store to
(re) authorise the computer...

Browsing etc still not working...

Thanks

Could you try turning off the firewall completely for a bit?

Also, what values do you have in your DNS fields?

Do you mean turning the Firewall off on the router or in the OS? If
the latter I've already done that.

Airport is set up to use DHCP with manual address and the DNS server
entries are blank.

If you can manually add entries to the DNS fields, try putting in the IP
address of your router.

If that doesn't work try the following addresse:208.67.222.222 and
208.67.220.220

Those are the IPs for OpenDNS.

Hi Jim

Well I'm not quite sure why it's sudenly working - I put in my
router's IP address in the DNS fields - that didn't work. Then I put
my ISP's servers in there, that didn't work, then I put the Open DNS
servers in instead, that didn't work either. Then I stopped and
restarted Airport and suddenly it's all working. The DNS entry now had
four servers, the ISP ones (greyed out) and the Open DNS ones. I've
now removed the Open DNS ones...

So the only thing that's not working now is the AirTunes speakers in
iTunes, though they play quite happily through Airfoil... need to keep
investigating that one, and also need to try turning the OS firewall
back on...

Thanks for you help Jim and Chris...

As you think it is DNS (it does seem likely) then what does your
/etc/resolv.conf look like? It should probably point at your router,
but on the offchance your router's not responding properly to DNS
requests, try pointing it direct at your ISP's nameservers.

Before you change the settings, try doing a few manual 'dig's of
addresses that ought to resolve. www.apple.com, for instance.

When I do "cat /etc/resolv.conf" from a Terminal window it says there
is no such file or directory...

Thanks
