iphone ringtones

Call me blithe, but not having an iPhone means I haven't really paid too
much attention to the iphone threads. However, my wife has just killed
her N73, so replaced it with an iPhone.

The first thing she asked me was how to put her own ringtone on it.

Apparently you can't. Is this for real? I can't be bothered with
jailbreaking etc, but I really really can't believe that you can't
simply choose a song from your iTunes and set it as your ringtone.

Tell me it ain't so.

I have to admit to being a bit underwhelmed so far. Not nearly as
intuitive as I was hoping it would be. How do you go "back"? It seems
like everything is a one way navigation from the main menu down, then
when you're done, start again up at the main menu. Hmm.

Top left hand corner of screen (just below carrier ID) will have the context
specific back button, if appropriate for what you are doing.

Don't know about ring tones. I use Old Phone. So should everyone else ;-P

I don't, it's too strident and gives me heart palpitations when it
goes off.

I use xylophone with the vibrate on.

I did make a Captain Pugwash ringtone from the original theme tune, but
got fed up with explaining what it was to the under 40 year olds.

I would phone your GP in that case, Penicillin will probably sort that

I've got the Wicked Tinkers' version of 'Scotland the Brave' as my rington
(yes, I know, it's sad) but I use this for my text message sound:

<http://www.ursaminorbeta.co.uk/zen-message.mp3>

The reason being: I don't hear short messages, no matter how loud.

Actually I'm not sure if that's the exact one I'm using, as I extended it
slightly. iT's pretty much the same though.

All knocked up in Quicktime, after extraction using Audio Hijack Pro, just
to keep this slightly on topic :-)

How convenient!

Did you say 'How the hell do you expect me to know, do I look like an
iPhone expert'?

No, it doesn't really work does it.

Well, I dont really know, because I havent paid attention to the iPhone
posts either, and have just bought a different phone, but I seem to
remember that there was something about doing ring tones in garageband.
They were also going to be on the iTunes store at some point at £2 a
pop, but I think that didn't happen.

Dunno, but Mr Fry was right. You just convert what you want to AAC of
the right format, change the extension to m4r, open it with iTunes and
sync to the phone.

So why can't you just select an item in your iTunes and say 'add as ring
tone'

Because it would kneecap the ringtone "industry"? It is amazingly big business.

Yes, but most 'non-iPhone' phones just play standard AACs, WAVs or even
midis and come with software to transfer the ringtones on there. If you
select an audio track on a nokia there is an option to make it a
ringtone, but the ringtone industry isn't damaged at all.

Apple don't want to damage their relationship with the music labels.

This is the downside of using a closed end-to-end system like iPhone
(+iTunes); Apple can't do anything that would piss off the record
industry, and they make loads of cash from ringtone sales.

There are upsides, everything's nicely integrated, convenient and works
as intended, but freedom to do what you want is the price you pay...

They need to be careful with that. That is how sony went from the hip
creator and generic labeler of a whole generation of devices with the
walkman, to the tired old people who were trying to flog minidisks on
street corners

Get any music file you want, convert it to AAC, change the file
extension to .M4R, then add it to iTunes.

Garageband has an option to "Export to iTunes as Ringtone" or similar.

Subject to a maximum length IIRC; 8 seconds, or 30 seconds or something.

it's far to home screen dependent, but then it's not really a multy
tasking device, no swap file etc, i't doesn't encorage switching between
apps while one app is running, etc.

this said it's a very nice device i use it for web/email/maps on the go
a lot, but it really is work in progress and still really is a american
phone.

Well, you can't do exactly that, but it is pretty easy to create new
ringtones (even without Garageband):

I haven't done this since iTunes 7.6, but hopefully it still works.

(not an answer, really, but I love it).

I thought you could create your own ringtones in Garage Band, and they'd
be 'acceptable' to the iPhone?

Using the, uh, back button? Top left, looks like a, uh, back button?

I'm now firing up Garageband to make myself a ringtone from Archie Bell
& the Drells' "Tighten Up".

Careful - if the phone rings in public, you might find yourself
indulging in the new dance craze in front of strangers.

Yes, some things have a back button. But none of the things I was
playing with when I wrote that had a back button, either on the iPhone
or in real life.

I'm not really fussed about using my own ringtone, but I would like it
louder. When it's in my jacket pocket I can often feel the vibrate when I
can't hear it ring.

Which is as it should be for all mobile phones. This penchant some folks
have for loud, naff, ringtones is a mystery.

I agree, but I would like it loud enough for me to hear it.
