As subject - after (dis)service pack 1, double-clicking a file created
in Word 2003 just changes the focus to Word 2008 but doesn't open the
file. Choosing Get Info... shows the correct application selected to
open the file, but it doesn't work.
Word docs created with windows and mac versions of word other than 2003
seem to work OK when double clicked.
Any ideas? I've seen the MacFixIt stuff, running sudo update_prebinding
-debug -root / -force
and rebooting doesn't work.

Does dragging the doc to the running Word app icon work?
Cheers,
Chris

Just tried a few here and they all work. Is it a couple of specific
files, or all files?

All .doc files received from Windows users via Thunderbird 2. Even if I
save them to the desktop, double clicking them still doesn't open them
in Word 2008.

It may just be a problem with opening Word for Windows file. There's a
thread on this on microsoft.public.mac.office.word.
I have exactly the same problem too.

It's bloody irritating. The thread doesn't suggest a fix.

You can open the files from within Word via Cmd-O as a workaround.

It's a workaround - but come on, how basic is it to be able to open an
attachment by double clicking it?
I'm very cross.
Onyx launchservices and repair permissions voodoo didn't help either.

I agree, it's a big problem that their testing failed to spot a problem
opening their own file format!

Yep, they shoved it out the door when it was half-cooked.
Me, I'm keeping on Office 2004 for at least another year.. with all its
bugs and general ineptitude.
If you want something solid, choose between LaTeX and InDesign CS3.
(The latter for small values of solid, but at least it can do
typography.)
Pages is not to bad for church newsletters.
I'm slowly getting to the realisation that if you have to communicate
with somebody or some organisation in Word, then you are communicating
with somebody terminally sad.
I'm supposed to be a MVP (Microsoft Valued Professional) but I'm
currently working hard on preserving my integrity and getting sacked.
Office 2008 is an embarrassment of the first order.
They will need to work *very* hard to get any kind of cred back.

And so another entry for Quote Of The Year 2008 was born.

I've found exactly the same problem with Word 2008 files saved in .doc
format, similarly Excel files.
Nice to know it wasn't just me...

I think this may be a Thunderbird problem. .doc files can be opened by
double clicking when downloaded using Mail.app or webmail.
(No, open with... Microsoft Word.app doesn't work either).
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.mac.office.word/msg/a4fcfe8ffc06bd0a
How/why should Thunderbird be modifying files it's downloading?

Mind you, there wasn't a problem before SP1 ...
