I am posting here because Parallels is an OS X program after all, I have
used the demo with XP and now want to try Linux for the first time, can
those of you who have Linux installed, recommend a version for a newbie
to try ?

Are you after any specific features? If not, Mepis is my favoured distro
and is what I currently run on Virtual Box on my MBP, along with Fedora
9 and Debian...

What I like about Mepis is that it's fully featured, but not bloated, is
stable and has a very helpful forum at www.mepislovers.com.

I want to know how well VLC runs on Linux, I know its a broad church
with many and varied distros, I was thinking of getting an eeepc 900
after discussing it with Gareth Slee at work. If I do, I want to take it
abroad to use it to play Handbrake ripped DVD's to keep the kids amused
when they decide to get up at 5am.  Having said all that the version of
Xandros on the eee seems to be an Asus version (tabs etc). So I suppose
should be asking the eeepc owners in this group about installing VLC.

It runs really well on an EeePC 701.

Add the extra repositories:

http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=875

Then "apt-get install vlc"

For the most part, yes.  It has a media player (although I forget what it's
called) that'll play most stuff.

Does it play .avi, MP4 etc ? Which will allow me to rip the kids DVD's.

It plays mp4s. It certainly plays some kinds of avi's (the ones I have
tried).

I think Ubuntu is supposed to be quite friendly. Well, as Linux goes.

Yes Ubuntu is probably the one that I have heard mentioned the most.
thanks, I will try it along with the flavours Chris suggested, after all
it costs nothing to find out what each version is like.

If you can live with Brown. I can't take Ubuntu seriously after it got
Stob'd : http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/04/14/linux_manual/

I'm an SuSE Fan meself - OpenSuse is as stable as any other Linuxen, and
the Enterprise Server/Desktop variants are solid. It's only when you add
Open Enterprise Server that things get complicated, but then that's what
they pay me for :->

Best idea is to try the 5 minute linux manual:

<http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/04/14/linux_manual/>

maybe helpful.. you never know :-)

But yes, ubuntu is pretty easy.

most offer preconfigured "just boot me" disk images, I successfully
installed Mandriva this way on P. more than one year ago; no trouble
since then.
