Are you after any specific features? If not, Mepis is my favoured distro and is what I currently run on Virtual Box on my MBP, along with Fedora 9 and Debian...
What I like about Mepis is that it's fully featured, but not bloated, is stable and has a very helpful forum at www.mepislovers.com.

I want to know how well VLC runs on Linux, I know its a broad church with many and varied distros, I was thinking of getting an eeepc 900 after discussing it with Gareth Slee at work. If I do, I want to take it abroad to use it to play Handbrake ripped DVD's to keep the kids amused when they decide to get up at 5am. Having said all that the version of Xandros on the eee seems to be an Asus version (tabs etc). So I suppose should be asking the eeepc owners in this group about installing VLC.

If you can live with Brown. I can't take Ubuntu seriously after it got Stob'd : http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/04/14/linux_manual/
I'm an SuSE Fan meself - OpenSuse is as stable as any other Linuxen, and the Enterprise Server/Desktop variants are solid. It's only when you add Open Enterprise Server that things get complicated, but then that's what they pay me for :->
