Entourage

After updating Microsoft Office from version 12.0.1 to version 12.1.0,
Entourage fails to launch. Word, Excel and Powerpoint are all OK.
Does anyone know why this has happened?

Because it's Microsofty and somewhat broken?

Start Entourage while holding the option key down, and you'll get a
database repair wizard. Try the check option, then repair if
necessary.

Interesting - I didn't know you could do that.
It didn't do any good though :-(
I'll just have to live without Entourage.

I've been quite a vocal defender of Entourage round these parts. I've been
using Apple Mail for the last while as part of another attempt to get it to
work the way I want it to. One of the things I really liked about Entourage
was the show unread message only setting for each folder. I couldn't
understand why Apple Mail didn't do this. The Applescript solutions and the
Apple Mail command to focus on or display the selected messages only just
didn't provide the required functionality.

I have 20 mailboxes including InBox and rules set  to sort mail into them as
it comes in. These are nested into containing folders etc. In the current
version of Apple Mail I have a Smart Folder with the same name as each of the
20 set to show only unread mail in the corresponding real mailbox. These are
nested in the same structure as the real Mailboxes that are under ON MY MAC.
I keep thn ON MY MAC section hidden using the disclosure triangle and use the
Smart mailboxes section for reading mail. It even shows the unread count for
nested groups when they are collapsed. It works perfectly, I've finally got
Apple mail working the way I want! It's still a bit sensitive at taking the
mailboxes offline if the POP3 server is busy but I can live with that.

I no longer have Office 2008 on my portable Mac and use Mail, Pages, Numbers
and Keynote (with Outlook and Office 2003 Word, Excel and PowerPoint) in a
Windows VM for backup.

So you can liv without Entourage if required :-)

I also prefer Apple's Mail app. but I don't like being
defeated ......... especially by a Microsoft app :-)

If you want to carry on reviving it, you can reset the Entourage
content to blank by removing (or just moving away) the folder
Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office 2008 Identities.

You can reset the Entourage settings by removing/hiding the
com.microsoft.entourage.* files from ~/Library/Preferences/

I've done all this and now get as far as the main window.
Seconds later, though, it quits with an error report.

It was updating, using this service pack, that caused the problem in
the first place :-)

I'm just going to have to give in.
I actually use Apple's Mail app. anyway but I don't like being defeated.

Ah - that's probably the trouble then. Entourage doesn't seem to have
updated completely, but I bet enough bits have been that the mixture
breaks. The MS installer is utterly incapable of recovering from that
situation.

I'd be tempted to uninstall Office, delete any leftovers in the
/Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/ and the Library folders and
install the lot again from scratch.

Oh, well if you're not actually aiming to use Entourage, just delete
Entourage.app and be happy! I'd use Mail.app if it talked to my
Exchange server (which it doesn't, I've tried).

Use Outlook in a VM and let it go. Even when I used Entourage I didn't use it
for Exchange.

I prefer Entourage 2008 to Outlook 2007, which are my two options. I'd
prefer Mail+iCal+addressbook more, thobut.
