So, what stuff do you think we'll see on the much-rumoured next-gen
iPhone, and what stuff would you like to see? I'm not talking about the
third-party software we'll see soon, just the out-of-the-box experience
of the next model.
- 3G
I think this is an almost dead-cert based on some of the screenshots
that have turned up. 90% chance, though I'm not so bothered by it.
- Capacity
A bump to 16 and 32GB models is probably a 90% chance. A 64GB model
would be sweet, but I reckon only 40% chance of that.
- GPS
I'd love to see proper, built-in GPS plus a sat nav for driving (whether
Google Maps based or from TomTom or Garmin). GPS itself (ie no
differences from the current location-based software, just more
accurate) I give a 60% chance. 50% chance of having something from
Google that gives driving directions. 20% chance of something from a
third party other than Google being bundled in.
- Front camera
I think chat will be much advertised by Apple, and most likely they'll
stick in a cheapo front cam and show off that you can do video chat as
well as standard text chat. 80% chance.
- Redesigned case
Apple like making what was the height of gadget fashion look outdated. I
don't think there's any doubt we'll see a different case design; nothing
drastic, just enough to make it obvious from a glance that this is a new
iPhone, not one of those old fuddy-duddy iPhones. 95% chance for a
refinement in colours, shapes or materials (think iPod 5G to iPod
Classic); 10% chance of a significant change (think iPod nano).
- Revised email app
I think that the email app will get a bigger feature set and possibly a
UI change thanks to the Exchange capability. Gotta keep those suits
comfortable with what they're already familiar with. 70% chance.
- Spotlight
Per-app spotlight-branded searching; 90% chance. Global search across
all apps; 50%. I'd love to see a global search.
- Tasks
A simple task list. 85% chance.
- Missed alerts list
As I understand it, there's no way to 'defer' an alert. If I get an
alarm pop up to remind me of something, I can't use the device until I
have dismissed the alarm; by the time I've finished what I wanted to do,
I've forgotten about the alarm. On my Treo, you can dismiss these to a
list of missed alerts; you then get an on-screen notifier telling you
that this list contains items but you can get on with whatever and come
back to them later. It would be nice if the iPhone handled this well, eg
you could dismiss (acknowledge and remove) the alert, snooze it (so it
reminds you again in a few minutes) or defer it (so it goes to a list
that you can come back to at a later time of your choice). That's
really, really important to me, but I don't hold out much hope - 35%
chance?
- LEDs
I guess Apple don't like the 'tacky' status LEDs on other phones, but I
hope that they recognise that they are useful and decide to add
something that shows that the phone wants your attention. I'm sure they
can do it elegantly, and it would be useful for things like missed
calls, alerts (see above) or emails. I think there's a 70% chance of
this, but it won't be more than one LED.
What do you lot think then? Agree? Disagree? Other ideas?

I'll gow ith 3G as a cert naturally, front camera almost certain and
GPS (fingers crossed) a good possible. A redesigned case seems likely
to accommodate the addittional camera, larger battery and to
differentiate. I'm not so sure that incraesed storage will be on the
cards this time round. Haptic feedback would be a nice addittion
though and could answer the critics who prefer hardware keyboards.
Spotlight looks likely, some better mail fucntionality would be
welcomed as would better SMS handling. All that though should come
courtesy of v2.0 so we'll all be able to take advantage.
All in all though I'm happy with mine, I did try going back to my
Blackberry 8800 for a few days but missed the ease of use of the iPhone
so the 8800 is back in the drawer.

Badly needs support for adding more peripheral devices via wireless.
Printers is OK, but additional support via something like wireless USB
would be good. A physical USB port working in host mode as well would be
good.
Also, it'll be nice if it could dock horizontally...
And a user replaceable battery would make sense...

What I wouldn't be surprised by not what I want... Gigabytes of
onboard RAM holding tough technology to take care of the problem
of uppity users who think themselves entitled to connect "their"
iPhone to services not regulated by Apple and its cronies *koff*
business partners. (Cynique, moi?)

In which case we wouldn't get them in the UK, since that's illegal.

The iPhone notebook facility will synchronise with Mail.app's Notes.
So that it's useable.
(This currently shrieks of something that someone just 'forgot' when
implementing synching.)

MS Exchange Support,
MS Exchange Support,
MS Exchange Support.
Also, what would be useful was if they unlocked their bluetooth, and allowed
it to be used as a modem, as every other phone does.....

That's not much of a prediction - Apple's announced this already.

I've been wondering about the WWDC. It's kinda close, and they'll
probably un-beta the SDK at that point... but they don't usually
announce new consumer products at the WWDC and it's a long time to be
out of stock of iPhones (everywhere is out of stock now, isn't it?)
I didn't realise there was a new store opening. I'd be interested to see
if the new phone does arrive when that store opens...

O2 have announced a 3G iPhone "Within weeks"
O2 boss Matthew Key says the 3G iPhone will be unveiled "in the coming
weeks".
Key made the comment when speaking to press and analysts after the
announcement of the network's first-quarter results this morning. He's
the Chairman and Chief Exec of O2 owner, Telefónica Europe, and he said
his company would be making an announcement with Apple in the "coming
weeks".
Key declined to say exactly when the announcement would take place,
saying, "that's more of a question for Apple," while promising a joint
announcement. He also confirmed the network to hold a multi-year
exclusive agreement with Apple for selling the iPhone in the UK and
Ireland.

Hm. Can we assume that he's just lost the iPhone contract?

Not according to the last paragraph.

Rumours look good this time round - 3G, GPS, video takes care of a lot
of my criticisms. Not all though , since you specifically said "like to
see" instead of "likely to see"...
Use as a 3G modem - $SNOWBALL_IN_HELL chance
Bluetooth file transfer - $SNOWBALL_IN_HELL chance
Removable media - $NURSE_NURSE_THE_SCREENS chance
MMS - 10% chance, this -might- actually happen I think but low down list
Capacity - I go with 32Gig at the top so agree with you. I'd put 64Gig
in the same realms as my snowball however. Shame as 64Gig is what I
really want, 32Gig I'd have to think about. (My library sans video is
31Gig).
LEDs - very much doubt it but could be.
But the number one thing I'd like to see:
Choice of tarrif - 20%
Choice of network - a ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
Would love to eat my words over those last two.
Cheers,
Ian

Do Americans use MMS? If not, no chance.

Don't forget there's some OS overhead, so your library really won't fit.

The iPhone needs better battery life. The current models are nowhere
near the competition in terms of usability between charges and 3G will
make it even worse. And heaven help us if GPS is included. You'll barely
make it to the end of the road.
More features in the mail app would be nice, it's currently very
restricted. I would like the ability to choose which email account to
use when responding to received messages.
I would also like Blackberry support but that's highly unlikely.
Having said all that, mine proved invaluable on a recent trip to The
Gambia where the cell networks have no data service, despite Vodafone
assuring me my Blackberry would work. The iPhone connected to the hotel
wifi network, when it was working, giving me email at least.
It impressed to locals too.

Which is exactly what happens with the N95 and N95 8Gb - one day
battery life, considerably worse than the iPhone. The N95 *is* the
iPhone's standard competition in the high-end non-business phone
market.

Blackberry would salvage it as an email device, MobileMail.app is
currently way too slow and clunky (and expensive in terms of bits
transferred). S60r3 has Blackberry client software, so it's not
impossible.
And more bluetooth functionality, ffs.
