Wifi in iBooks

My sister has an iBook of currently-unknown model, and happened to
mention that it isn't much use in her current student digs due to not
having wifi.

Are wifiless iBokos generally able to be upgraded to wifi? If yes, is
there a standard Airport card that'll work in any, or do I have to
talk her into working out exactly which model she has?

I'm sure someone will confirm, but I believe the iBooks all take the
same card. The one you need is the original Apple Airport Card (not
Airport Extreme), which only supports 802.11b so it won't be impressive
in terms of speed, but good enough for most needs in an iBook.

I have one in my old iBook Clamshell. To install you just have to remove
the keyboard to access the slot it sits in, and attach the antenna
cable. All iBooks should already contain the antenna.

G3 iBooks take the old 802.11b card

G4 iBooks take the Airport Extreme card, fittings pretty much similar to
the G3s.

(Late spec G4s take a different board on the logic board but those ones
come from the factory with it fitted as standard anyway so it shouldn't
be one of those.)

I stand corrected. In that case Jaimie will definitely need to find out
which iBook model his sister has before buying a card.

As far as I recall, none of the G3 iBooks came with an Airport card
installed, but they all take the original, slower 802.11b cards.

Some of the later G4 iBooks had an Airport Extreme (802.11g) card
already installed. Those that didn't, could be upgraded with one, so in
short...

G3 = 802.11b

G4 = 802.11g

Excellent - I do hope you're right! Searching for "apple airport
802.11b" on eBay shows that they're compatible with "all iBooks except
G4" - do the G4s take Extremes?

As you will have probably gathered by now, I was wrong! I thought the
Airport Extreme was a more recent development than the G4 iBooks.

In that case you will definitely need to work out which model your
sister has. Should be simple enough as selecting 'About This Mac' from
the Apple Menu should show whether it is a G3 or G4.

Indeedy. Mind you, either way it's good news: they all have sockets
and aerials for a wifi card of some sort, and that's the main thing.

Yep. Actually, I don't even know if she's running OSX on it - is a
random iBoko likely to be running OS9? If so, where would she find
some clue as to the G3/G4ness of it?

Unlikely, but possible (my first one was a discounted/end-of-line original
IceBook from JL - it came only with OS9).

'About This Mac' :-)

Only the G3s will run os9.

If it is a coloured iBook it's an old clamshell, so G3 & 802.11b, G3
snow iBooks just say iBook under the screen, G4 iBooks say 'iBook G4'
under the screen and have a grey not opaque keyboard.

Oh, that's excellent, thanks - I'll just get her to tell me what's
written under the screen. All I know so far is that it's white, so it
could be either.
