I was checking and clearing some old Windows files off the Zip drives
that I used to use for backup in the old days. Those were the days when
four 100MB drives was a pretty comprehensive backup!

Heh. My first Mac was an LC475 with an 80MB drive. When I got my Zip
drive I could backup my entire hard drive onto a single disk.

Probably the last time I could backup my boot drive onto a single item
of removal media.

I can still get my off-site backup onto a single (albeit dual layer)
DVD. That's not the full drive though just the key stuff that I would
need to get me going again.

In my case by the time I'd got around to getting writable optical media
(and a drive for it) my hard drive was already bigger.

I _liked_ Zip disks. I never suffered from Click of Death.

I think mine got donated to a fellow Mac user a while ago. I've
certainly not seen it for a few years now. Shame, as it's getting old
enough to be part of the collection.

Nah. Thanks, but I'm not quite _that_ sad. Yet :-)

I liked them too, and never had the click, but having observed it close
up on my friends zip drive, it made me more reluctant to trust it.
Especially the occasions when you got an odd click.

Only sold mine a few years back (at £40 - was suprised it was still
worth something)

I was given  one by a friend a few months ago and it promptly hit the
forgotten drawer until it became very useful when my flatmate produced a
number of old Zip disks and asked me whether I had a way of putting the
files therein into her current Mac. Wait a minute, this looks a little
dodgy for some reason...
