iPhone deal halo effect

The £169 iPhone deal has worked in my office. Several people (all techies)
have bought the 8GB models and unlocked them with ZiPhone. There were 3 on
Monday :-) At least one of them is now talking about a MacBook Pro.

The only problem is that everyone uses the Old Ring tone, which is confusing!

I bought one and know three other people who bought one last week. I
used pwnage to unlock mine, which is apparently (I say this as I'm not a
techie really - compared to all you huge nerds, I'm a small nerd ;))
more stable and easier to use than ZiPhone and even iLiberty.

It is a thing of beauty and with the earbuds you can still gaze at it
adoringly when you're talking on it :D

I assume we all saw the story earlier this week that Apple have arranged
production contracts for "up to" 25 million of the iPhone MkII

It's the lower cost that is making people jump on board now. the MKII will
likely be up in the £250 and up range.

Does anyone know if a PAYG Orange Sim will work in a jailbroken iPhone? Will
it get email over GPRS on that set-up? Thinking of getting on for my sister.

I think the sim will work fine, not sure about the email though.

My prediction is that you'll have the option of buying the new iPhone
SIM Free /or/ tied to O2. The SIM free version will be around the £250
mark, maybe a bit more, and the O2 one will cost considerably less.

If that comes to pass, it'll be more like £400 sim free (see Nokia N95
prices, and also iPod Touch prices + at least £100) and the same old
£270 with O2 - or maybe £299 to start with.

I'll be happy to be wrong, of course.

So will I ;-)

Unfortunately I think it will be closer to £400 sim free.

Given that Carphone Warehouse have apparently completely sold out of
both models now, it seems unlikely they'll restock. Apple are always
good at running stock down two days before a refresh. So that just
leaves O2 shops, doesn't it?

And the Apple Refurb store, which has started showing iPhones in the
categories, I see.

Yes it will.

However, it's wickedly expensive to even go near GPRS. I downloaded about
half a dozen web pages last week, and chewed up my entire £20 balance.

Yikes. Thanks for that. I'd already decided not to get her an iPhone but it's
good to know that info for the future.

You should be able to set up Orange World
<URL:http://www1.orange.co.uk/entertainment/OrangeWorld/OrangeWorldCosts.
php> to cap your expenditure by day or week. Other PAYG providers who
offer data bundles can work out cheaper, though.

I shall try that later in the week. Would anyone consider a sweepstake on how
long it takes me to set it up? I'd put my money on around 45 - 60 minutes,
judging from past experiences with Orange.

I'll annotate the expected saga, and report back.

But other PAYG providers won't connect to the internet via an iPhone. At
least, O2 won't.

Right, here we go. The quoted URL offers:

>         £1 bundle, for all day mobile access
>         £2.00 daily capped rate, so you never pay more than this a day
>         £5 for a week of anytime mobile internet access

The second of these looks like what I want, so I set the stopwatch, and we're
off. 28 minutes later, I still have no 'Browsing Bundle' nor any idea how I
can get the £2 daily capped rate

For anyone who can be bothered, here's the transcript of how I've just spent
28 minutes.

Cheers,

I bought mine (Ziphoned to Orange) at £270 and think it is good value at that
higher price. At £170 it's a steal - if you can find one!

Yes. The thing is I always thought I would wait for v.2 but it was a
combination of vouchers I suddenly acquired that were eligible for use
in CPW, and the fact that I could get reasonably good money for my
loathed k850i. Then tech lust took over.

I don't regret it at all. It really is a fantastic piece of kit that
does more than I want and definitely more than I really need. I love it
;) Also, the 3G and alleged GPS though nice is more than I need.

I wonder what Apple are going to do with the new one. I've heard that it
didn't sell as well as expected in Europe and that I assumed was largely
down to the contract tie in allied to the purchase price. Which may
explain CPW and O2s decision to unstuff the channel prior to the new one
dropping. They sold out in a week. If it was cheaper on the contract, or
could be bought for less (like what just happened with the 8Gb) and used
on any network, I think it would sell like hot cakes.

I was always puzzled as to why I didn't see more 'in the wild'. This
week however, I've been sat next to 2 on the train.

The price is definitely the catalyst - £169 isn't a lot of money,
whereas £270 is. IYSWIM.

I am surprised though, that people are buying them (one assumes)
knowing that there is a new version coming out in a month.

I'm planning to get the new one when available and attempt to buy-off
Mrs Thom with my current iPhone.

I'm kinda hoping that there will be a lot of people out there (who am I
kidding, it'll be most of the people) who don't know the difference
between one model from another, they just get tempted by the fact that
it'll run on any network and the massively inflated ebay market for
chipped phones will still be around[1] so that if needs be I can flog
mine and get a v2 model without it costing me an arm and a leg.

Having said all that, I don't really need the bandwidth that 3g offers,
so it's a bit of a moot point.

[1] I know a guy who runs a local restaurant I frequent who was proudly
showing off his chipped 16Gb iPhone a couple of weeks ago which he paid
£500 for!!!!

It would be nice, however, I rarely commute by public transport so the
need to carry all of my music or hours of video files with me everywhere
I go isn't an issue. Hell, I've never even put a video on it and tbh I
don't know how or what I would need to do to encode it.

iSquint is relatively clean and simple, in case you're ever tempted
(or want it as a tech demo to impress friends).

The 8gig in my iPhone is roughly enough, to be honest. I'd rather have
more, but I just know it would end up full of cruft rather than
forcing me to pick and choose. Anything between the current 8gig and
"enough to hold my complete music collection plus a few gig for pics
and the odd video" would be rather wasted because of that.
