Just posting this for reference,
Back when I was using an Atari and the mouse was getting old,
the tracking and clicking would become erratic and not work
properly, but it would never crash the computer.
Same thing on Mac, in the past.
Well, my optical USB mouse seemed to be working ok in terms of
tracking and clicking, except it caused a system crash every
minute.
I've replaced the mouse and even though my computer
still crashes once a day for no good reason, everything is
working now.
I find this really annoying, why should a dodgy mouse cause
the whole system to crash? I did a clean install and all sorts
to fix this, what a waste of time.

I also have a number of other problems and questions, but
because I'm finding it hard to be specific in my question,
this could easily end up as a very foggy conversation.
Let me have a go anyway.
I'm experiencing problems with Quicktime, Logic Pro 7.2.3, even
the opening of folders, basically anything that involves audio
or moving graphics. My computer is an old G4 gigabit ethernet
dual 450 upgraded to dual 1.8 (Sonnet Encore) and graphics
upgraded to Radeon 9800 to support Quartz Extreme /
Final Cut Express. OS 10.4.11, latest firmware for my machine.
The bus speed is 100, while the installed ram are 133.
I'm often pushing my CPU to the limit, this does NOT
result in crashes, but there have been other funny
occurences like audio tracks going missing during offline
bounce.
My vague non-specific question is along the lines of...
Are the new operating systems or versions of Logic etc
somehow optimized for newer Macs and faster bus
speeds? My machine meets the system requirements
but only because I've upgraded the CPU and graphics
card?
Or are the newer operating systems, versions of Quicktime
etc not written properly? People seem to be having similar
problems on G5/10.5, not sure if that's the case with
Mac Pro's though.
In my opinion there should be a reasonable
amount of backwards compatibilty and support for older
machines, damn I've spent so many hours on this
machine/system folder and and it's still not crash-proof.

Whoops.
Seems that was a misdiagnosis. All my system
crashes are due to overheating.
Anything that pushes the ram, like moving graphics
or audio combined with mouse movements were
crashing the computer.
I've upgraded the processor, upgraded the graphics card,
and installed more RAM on my G4. All of this combined
causes the computer to overheat, which in turn causes
the RAM to malfunction and crash the computer.
My G4 (gigabit ethernet) has 2 fans in it, but I suppose
I'm gonna have to buy another one from Maplin.
Cleaning some of the dust off the first fan might have
helped too.
The endless troubleshooting was driving me up the
wall, I've reinstalled the system several times, deleted
corrupted preference files, changed the mouse, etc,
etc. I did feel it had something to do with RAM but
the ram cards themselves are ok as long as it doesn't
get too hot in there.
