Just in case you are in the mood for yet another suggestion - StoryMill
(which is part of the current MacUpdate bundle) has a clutter-free
writing mode that I quite like - it takes over the whole screen like
WriteRoom but it does white text on a blue background, bringing back
wonderful nostalgic images of the old days of WordPerfect. Yes, I
really did like WordPerfect.

StoryMill, incidentally, is a really nice product if writing is your
thing. It's aimed at fiction writers but I find it good for technical
writing too.

I am debating about this with myself right now.  Technically, Devonthink
sort of does all this, although not the cork boards that scrivener does,
and not as prettily.  I will soon have a Big project to plan out, but i
always find myself turning to pen and paper...

But doesn't TextEdit do pretty well all of that?

And I'm not impressed by the retro green-on-black either; even in the
days of green mono moitors and (Aaaah!) Protext, I used to run black
text on a necessarily green page. I always found that more restful.

TextEdit at full screen does it all, except maybe the autosave, but
that's just a Cmd-S from time to time... And in OS10, the system no
longer falls over on its own (except very occasionally in Word), so
auto-save isn't nearly as necessary as it used to be.

If run TextEdit full screen, like with the green button clicked,  the
only other thing on screen is the top menu bar and my small Dock on the
right- which I could banish if I wanted to. It's just a huge blank
sheet, nothing but me, the text and absolutely minimal tools to enable
me to control fonts etc.

I agree that it lacks the purity/austerity of WriteRoom, but not by
much. And there's instant access if needed to all the other stuff on the
Mac.

Exactly. That's exactly why it's not as good as WriteRoom, if what
you're looking for is the absence of distraction.

Maybe my ability not to be distracted is another aspect of my peculiar
wonderfulness.

On reflection, that's nonsense, I lurve distraction.

There's another app - the name of which escapes me - that disables your
network connection for a specified time, and nothing short of a reboot will
get it back before then.

Might be useful.

Eeek. I knew about XP SP3 being delayed - that's fine with me, I'd rather
they got it right before unleashing it. What I can't quite understand is how
Vista became so much of a train wreck. It's almost exactly how I picture an
OS designed by committee.

!? Pulling out the network cable or disabling Airport works pretty
well, and you don't have to reboot to get it back.

Also what's wrong with "Hide other appls" if you only want to work
with 1 appl? It's been around since MultiFinder.

I think the point is that you can re-enable those at will - this enforces
the disconnected state a little more, thus helping people with less
willpower.

True, but this just enforces being cutoff from outside world distractions.

There is, of course, an easier way - create a second user and populate the
Dock for that user with only the apps you need for productivity. So, no
MacSOUP, no iChat etc.

Cuts down the distractions nicely.

Turning off fast user switching helps here. True, it's still a log off/log
on away but it's a bit more hassle and sometimes that's all that's needed.

Then I really would be inclined to give Freedom a try. I know you'd feel a
bit iffy about it on your current Mac but I suspect it's just issuing a

ifconfig [interface] down

command, starting a background timer, then issuing the 'up' command. If you
reboot at any point your machine will automatically restart the network
interfaces.

(GLANCES RISKILY AT SUBJECT OF THIS THREAD)  And the RealWorld
writing app (well, tool) that hides everything else would be a
cup of coffee spilled across the paper?  (Now how's that for a
screen-secrecy-veil visual paradigm: wide, frothy, brown stain
spreading from a toppled mug, with insects cavorting in it?)

(These days, with LCDs, one doesn't need a screen _saver_; but
a secrecy veil can be good.)

No, a newspaper. Quickly thrown onto extremely embarrassing fan letter
to David Cameron, asking for autographed photo to put on dressing table.

You've done that too?

Except you'd sling the camera over the shoulder and get distracted along
the way and never make the cafe. Sounds a much better way to work
though.

i was with an old friend last night who took up photography 10 years ago
and got lucky & successful v quickly.  (portraits are her thing). She
reckoned she must have taken 500,000 shots in her lifetime.

I can easily believe it. I reckon I've done about 40k on the two digital
bodies in just over two years.

I can believe that. I've taken over 40K in the last five years (prob
more, just the ones I have in iPhoto reach that number).

I am starting to come round to your way of thinking, and reckon that I
should get a nice new telephoto lens, rather than a new camera body.
(unless i was going to go full frame, which I'm not, for the moment
anyway).

I just saw this in TUAW.  Bokeh "When you select one app to focus on,
Bokeh actually blurs the background and helps you isolate the task at
hand." and "allows you to put applications into suspended animation and
free up additional processing power for your crunchiest tasks (3D
rendering, Photoshop filters, etc.) when you need it most. You can
select a single app for focus, or suspend applications one at a time."

Haven't tried it as I have no use for it, E&OE, etc.

This one doesn't seem to be, I didn't see it mentioned here:

Thanks - I've decided to be disciplined. (!)  I only can't concentrate
like that when i'm all over the place.

Scrivener also does the same.

I have been using LiteSwitch X for years. It is not just for when
you are writing, but at any time, and can do much more besides, in a
very simple, straightforward, user-friendly fashion. I could not
manage without it.

I liked it when I tried it but couldn't escape from the switching
panel. Each time I tried it would switch to front row.

WriteRoom is probably the one that was mentioned.

Scrivener and StoryMill both have full-screen modes as well, that do
what you are asking.

Jason.

It's a fairly simple app, but very nicely done. Works well on my old
Clamshell iBook as well!

Yes, but it's really, really clever, British and looks beautiful in use:

Of course the background transparency and all colours are user-defined.

White text on a white background? Or does it just use whitespace
particularly excessively?

(I suspect an image was missing from your post, Gwynne.)

I'm road testing it now.  It's rather fab in fact.

Hmm, £21.50 not bad really.  WriteRoom is 12.50 but this does a way lot
more.
