Weird iTunes glitch

Occasionally, maybe once a month, I click play in iTunes and nothing
happens. The iTunes buttons *say* that the song is playing but it
doesn't. In fact, all of the iTunes buttons appear functional, I can
skip forward to another song, shuffle through the song, etc, but it
simply doesn't play. Same happens if I go to the Music Store - the
previews don't play.

It's not a sound issue. I mean it's not that the song is playing but I
can't hear it. The song just stays at the same time, as if it is on
pause.

Weird. Quitting and relaunching iTunes doesn't fix it but I think a
restart does.

Hmmm. It started to work when I quit a few applications. Not sure which
one in particular made the difference but they were all normal enough -
Safari, Acrobat.
