Leopard-only, after a bit of a google.

I've never run Tiger on this MBP so don't know if the same problem
exists. I wasn't 100% sure it existed under Leopard, to be honest: I
just seemed to be making more typos than normal. What made me think
it was a bug was my repeated login failure. Always worked 2nd time...
The update's fixed it, though.

It did indeed. I have the mid 2007 MacBook Pro model, purchased in June
and running on 10.4.9 or 10.4.10 for several months, and I was aware of
this problem from day one.
It seems that Apple have released this patch as a firwmare update which
only runs under Leopard. Unless there is some technical reason why they
can't install the same firmware update under Tiger, this seems to just
be bloody mindedness on their part: they are trying to encourage anyone
suffering this problem to upgrade to Leopard.
A possible cheeky workaround: if you have access to another Mac which is
running Leopard, you might be able to boot the MacBook Pro from the
other computer's hard drive (involving Firewire target mode), install
the keyboard update, then reboot back into Tiger.

This has definitely affected my machine. Especially after the
screensaver/lock has kicked in, on getting back to the desktop the first
key-press is often ignored.
I haven't noticed it the last few days, however. Maybe I'm just getting
used to it?

You are lucky, Ric.
The keyboard update did NOT fix the missing-the-1st-char
problem on my MacBook Pro.
Intel Core 2 Duo
2.4 GHz CPU
Number of Cores 2
Memory 4 GB
Boot ROM ver MBP31.0070.B02
OS 10.5.2
Wonder if the very recent MacBook Pros are still afflicted
with this problem.
