It *ought* to be software-only, but stranger things have happened to
network stacks... There aren't any options for SMTP (it's too simple!)
so I'd expect it to be either a networking or a server-side problem.
Small mails go okay, I assume, so what about large body-text-only
emails?
Check there's actually an SMTP connection happening during the
attempted transfer, using the Progress pane and also with `netstat -a
| grep smtp-server-name` in a terminal.
Is it a fresh install of OS+everything, since it's a new machine
(however dodgy)? Out of interest, what are the duffness symptoms?

It's a
format-the-hard-drive-fresh-install-and-thank-the-Love-I-got-him-to-use-Time-
Machine.
Brief history:
Serious difficulty waking computer from sleep, or when restarting.
Check permissions using Disk Utility; DU hangs.
Try clean install of system. "Unknown Error - Cannot install system on this
disk" and entire disk now hopelessly corrupted.
Today, the plan is to reformat his disk, reinstall system, and then his data
from TM backup - NOT using Migration Assistant!
The guy who sold it to him says the problem is because it's connected to the
mains via an extension cable. A visit to the small claims court may be in the
offing.

Does anything appear in the logs (Console.app)?

IIRC the Installer has an option to format the disk in a menu.

That's quite a good one!

Sorted. You were right, it was a networking problem. His router was on the
way out, and he'd got a new Netgear (sorry Woody). As soon as I installed
that, all the e-mail problems went away.
Other problems are serious enough to start in a new thread.
