I'm amazed that double-clicking on a word doesn't select the entire
word, as it does in most other apps I believe.  Is there a way to switch
this on?

Double-clicking in Word 2008 here and all is well.

Fine here as well. Maybe toggle the "When selecting, automatically select the
entire word" setting in the Preferences->Edit pane to see if it rewrites a
setting file (although this shouldn't really effect double click select).

No... weird.  New Mac, new Office install... :-(

I always turn that off since it prevents me selecting part of a word.
What's it for, anyway?

Same here.

Don't know. I'm sure someone uses it.

Shouldn't do - that setting only affects selections of more than one
word. (What it does is automatically extend the selection to include the
whole of the first word as soon as you start to select a second. It has
no effect when selecting within a single word.)

> What's it for, anyway?
Makes it easier to select the whole of a sentence or phrase - saves
having to be quite so precise with the mouse when selecting the first word.

This was probably the issue I was having with it. I carefully started in
the middle of word 1, and as I went into word 2 et sez the bastard did
its thing, much to my annoyance.

Thanks for the clarification.

I fixed this by deleting the preferences.  Honestly, I''d have tried
this before posting had I not installed the software the very same
evening!

(Registration didn't like my product ID either).
